Amazon Explains How its Drone Service (Prime Air) Will Work

Source 1: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/495595-amazon-explains-how-t OP: pixeldensity

Video

  • designed to “safely get packages to customers in 30 minutes or less”

  • no launch date yet

  • “Putting Prime Air into service will take some time, but we will deploy when we have the regulatory support needed to realize our vision”

  • explained through a “funny” commercial with Jeremy Clarkson (of Top Gear fame)

  • hybrid “helicopter/plane” design

  • drones rise vertically to 400 feet like a helicopter then travels horizontally like a small plane

  • the drone in the video is only one version - soon to be “a whole family of Amazon drones”

  • different designs to carry different package sizes and for use in different environments/conditions

  • drone shown in video can fly for 15 miles

  • “sense and avoid” technology to avoid obstacles on the ground & in the air

  • user receives a message from Amazon when the “Prime Air” drone is arriving

  • user designates a landing area with an Amazon logo landing pad (small plastic pad, doesn’t have to be a permanent location)

  • drone scans landing zone for hazards, and if clear, lands (once again, vertically as a “helicopter”)

  • landing process seems very efficient - takes mere seconds to land, drop package, and take off once again

  • learn more at amazon.com/primeair

YouTube wants to compete with Netflix

Source 1: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/498385-youtube-wants-to-c OP: PCBjon

  • the Wall Street Journal reported that YouTube is looking to bolster YouTube Red with TV shows and movies

  • this would be content made available in addition to the original content they are developing with stars like Pewdiepie

  • it is currently unknown whether YouTube has secured deals with any traditional content studios

  • interesting note - traditional studios have historically been quite wary of Google’s online dominance

  • with that said, Google has the money to compete

  • Netflix is expected to have spent $3.3 billion in 2015 on licensing deals, with Hulu and Amazon at $1.5 billion each

  • recent hires by YouTube also support this route - former programming chief of MTV and former Netflix content executive

  • Google has some deals through Google Play Movies & TV, though those are for a la carte purchases rather than bulk streaming

Sony unlocks PS4’s 7th Processing Core for developers

Source 1: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/494548-sony-unlocks-ps4s... OP: kameshss

Source 2: http://www.geek.com/games/sony-unlocks-ps4s-7th-processing-c

  • Microsoft did this in January 2015 for the Xbox One

  • this should put the PS4 even further ahead of the XBone in terms of performance (Star Wars: Battlefront runs at 900p on PS4 and 720p on XBone)

  • one core must remain locked for background processes such as menus, so this should bring CPU performance on the PS4 as close to its potential max as it may get

Scott Wasson [Tech Report] joining AMD

Source 1: linustechtips.com/breaking-news-scott… OP: Agent181

Source 2: techreport.com/into-a-new-era

  • started “some months ago” when Scott was contacted by Raja Doduri from AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group

  • being brought on to help implement the frame-time-based testing methods for game performance that they’ve “championed at TR”

  • Scott will be focusing on creating better experiences for Radeon owners, and though “AMD is a company facing some distinct challenges right now… [they] have a renewed vision and focus.”

  • opportunity was “too good to pass up”

  • will make the transition in the new year

  • stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of Tech Report

  • TR will continue under Jeff Kampman, Managing Editor for the last year and a half

  • looking for a new writer to fill Scott’s role covering CPUs and graphics

  • a major change on the staffing side, but TR should continue to function as normal from a reader’s perspective

Yeah, maybe stop explaining the delays? You'll be there when you get there.

Those who need the explanation are usually the people that want to disagree or mock.

WAN ShOW format change request:

1. please have the forum members up-vote (pre selected topics from LTT employees) for you to cover in the show on Thursdays before the show

2. on Fridays before you air the show you can add your own shtick topics if they didn't get up-voted on Thursday

3. no more excuses about being late!, just be on time or stop making excuses or even explaining why you are late and just go straight into the topics/show (i.e stop wasting time talking about being late, its pointless and wastes even more time IMO)

4. do after-show parties on a more reliable schedule.. like a minimum of 1 company after-show party per 4 wan shows including guests, and LTT employees (no offense, but just Luke+Linus combo could be improved upon even if its just a little)

thanks for all the hard work LTT team!

also, I just got my royal blue LTT t-shirt a couple days ago.. its sweet :)

Scythe still in business!? From my perspective it's an extremely odd question. I always wondered why the Hyper 212 Evo was always the recommendation on american tech forums cause in germany the Scythe Mugen is and was for the longest time the absolute go to CPU cooler which everyone and their mom with a gaming rig uses and most Hardware retailers use those as well in their gaming PC offerings. While it's about 10-15€ more expensive it's certainly a much better performer than the Hyper 212 Evo but I guess you get your moneys worth with both.

It's good that they reacted so quickly, so I guess their still on top of things. I have a Bequiet Dark Rock 3 and Bequiet didn't give any comment at all so far which is worrying and disappointing. Luckily I'm still on Haswell cause I'm pretty sure that this one would crush a Skylake CPU.

Those legal problems you stated in the show concerning drones are not (IMO) actual problems. Air space questions are the most urgent 1st step decisions, that has to be resolved before large scale usage begins. Otherwise no problem.

I love your show! Keep up the good work.

Ps. I love to hear why you are late. It is hilarious to listen :D
