Good sub $150 CPU?

Hey there PC enthusiasts! I am a former console peasant looking to beseech me lords for their knowledge on CPUs. I am looking for a sub $150 (preferably around 100) 4-8 core processor that will let me game and allow me to become a content producer too (YouTube and Twitch). Ive been thinking about the Fx6300 or FX8320 for the longest time, but I would really like a quad core Intel CPU for hyper-threading (as they seem to be best for rendering and single core performance). I also came acroos the I7 930 quad core multi-threaded CPU for $100, but is it a good idea since it is old?? Im looking to get a CPU to last like 3+ years so ya... Thanks for reading! and thanks for the help!

do you still own the FX8320?

i say keep it till you have enough to get at least an i5 haswell or skylake over the used i7-930

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Hey there! Im new to the PC realm and have been looking FOREVER for the CPU to make mine. I have been stuck on the FX 6300, FX 8320, and even the A10-7870k (for ultra cheap performance). If anyone can tell me what they know about each to help me out that would be great! Also I just learned about the I7-930 and wonder if it would be the best after OC(seeing as it is the only sub$150 cpu with hyperthreading and 4+ cores)? I will have someone with experience help me with that of course but ya... Oh I plan on gaming but also want the option to start streaming and create some youtube vids. Thanks for reading! and thanks for any help!

I think he meant that he's stuck deciding between those.

Oh, do consider the new i3 6100. It beat the i5 2500k (bless that chip) at stock speeds, which is hugely impressive for a hyperthreaded $120 dual-core.

And a 1st generation i7 isn't the best deal at $150. If you're buying used, try and get more components with it (platform, RAM). Otherwise, you'd do well to throw down about $15 more for an i5-4460.

I do not have any CPU atm. And the I7 390 I found for $100(assume nonused from vendors?). 4 cores with hyper threading seems better than even say 8320, tho 8320 is newer I suppose,,,

Under $150? Save up $30 more and get an i5 4460.

If not then a $110 i3 4170 is a beast. I love mine.

IPC between the two is roughly equal, as much as it pains me to say it the FX will edge it out in content production (clock for clock).

If you can stretch the budget, and live near a Micro Center, the Xeon 1231v3 would be the best all around choice ($209 in-store only). i7 core distribution for i5 price, lower clock speed is counteracted by the significant IPC increase over the FX.

Even if you can find a cheap i7 930 (I wouldn't call $100 a steal) the boards that will support it, along with overclocking and rare SATA III support, will be insanely expensive -and all will be second/third/fourth hand at this point.

oh wow i didnt know that the peripherals would be super expensive. Thanks for the advice! Do you know of any "friendlier" hyper threaded options around my budget then? or you think a 8320 will be able to do everything just fine? or the 6300 for that matter?

The 1231v3 is as friendly as it will get for the Intel side in that price bracket for content production.

If you're looking for YouTube video production a la "Play with" sessions or recorded game content your GPU choice is going to play a somewhat more pivotal role as recording with baked in software like Shadow Play or Raptr will greatly reduce the CPU overhead if you're streaming with Twitch at the same time.

The 8320 is going to have similar restrictions as the i7-930 in regards to MOBO's as only a few select 970 boards and all 990 boards will support the thing dependably, even at stock clocks. You will also have to tack on a CPU cooler whereas the Xeon won't need an aftermarket solution.

If you could provide a budget for the entire system it would make narrowing down the choices available easier. As for the 6300 I wouldn't even consider it with this use case. All of my hands-on experience with the FX line were with the 4100 and 6300, neither of which were ever intended for anything more than web browsing and some light Photoshop and framing software. I think the 4100 build did end up playing some Sim's paired with a GTX 670, but The Sims can run on a toaster.

oh okay I see how that could help out a lot now. and I just added a whole build thread with my intended budget (500-600) so you can go to that too and help me find a gpu too if you want, thinking bout 950 or r9 380 that I can throw into sli/crossfire later down the line.
