4790K Build Recommendations

jag3498

I am currently employed at bestbuy, and as such I am eligible for the Intel Holiday Retail Edge deal. With that, I can purchase an i7 4790K for only $100 dollars, and would like to build a pc.

1. Budget & Location

USA and I would like to spend about 400 total (Including the CPU).

2. Aim

I plan to use it mainly for school work, which involves programming and working with large amounts of files at once. I also do some video and picture editing using premiere, photoshop and illustrator. Besides those functions, I also would like to do some light gaming. I currently play games like Rocket League, War Thunder, Space Engineers, Just Cause 2.  I would like to possibly get into some other, more demanding games, like Just Cause 3,   Battlefront and Fallout 4.

3. Monitors

I want to run two 1080p monitors, and that should be it for the foreseeable future.

4. Peripherals

Have all the peripherals I need, and I get a copy of windows 10 free through school.

5. Why are you upgrading?

My current computer is a laptop with an AMD a8-4500m APU, and it can barely handle what I try to do. And the screen is dying.

My main question is, how expensive of a motherboard do I need to properly support this cpu? I am not looking to spend a ton of money, but I think i need a motherboard with at least the H97 chipset. Would this be a good option:

Also, I would like to keep my gpu under 200. I know my CPU is way overkill for a GPU like that, but gaming isn't my main focus, and I am getting the CPU for really cheap. Any recomendations on a GPU?

I already own a 500 watt 80+ bronze power supply, as well as a case. I also have a spare 4gb of ddr3 ram, and would purchase a second identical stick. I also already have a 1tb harddrive, so only other optional storage would be an SSD.

Thanks for any help and suggestion!

You would want a Z97 board with a decent cooler to make use of the fact that your processor is unlocked to overclock it.

For the GPU under 200 dollars your best bet would be a R9 380.

Such a tight budget :\

He only needs another 4GB stick of RAM, a GPU and a motherboard for $300

He has a case, PSU, CPU, harddrive and a 4GB Ram stick.

Oh sorry didnt read the whole text.

Yea i'd just go with a r9 380 sapphire and some 4gb ram (that matches yours)

and with a Z97 mb for overclocking but all that has been said already

He'd also need a CPU cooler.

He'd also need a CPU cooler.

It comes with the CPU if he is able to get the boxed version.

The stock cooler doesn't really count as one with a 4790k. Probably will run really hot, even stock clocks.

But he could not get a cooler, and underclock it till he gets one to keep it safe.

Spend that extra $ on the RAM or a better 380.

Running a 4790k with the stock cooler is safe. If it wasn't safe Intel wouldn't include the cooler.

You can even change the multiplier and overclock it on the stock cooler. If the chip gets to hot it will thermal throttle. No big deal. ;)

You must be one of those guys that runs Prime 95 to stress test huh? :P

I guess, but you might as well keep your investments safe.

D: Why you no understand? ._.''

I know that he can get a better cooler and I'm fine with that and I 100% agree with you that he should get a better cooler, but it simply isn't true that it wouldn't be safe to run a Intel CPU cooled by a stock Intel cooler.

Stock coolers are for sure not pretty and they are probably not the most quiet coolers on the market, but they dissipate enough heat to keep any Intel CPU safe.

So please, I beg you, don't tell people that running an Intel cooler isn't safe, k?  :P
