Nope. You can only Xfire/SLI GPU's with the same chip.

There should be tons of 290s for sale TBH, many people sidegraded to the 390 for VRAM.

Whaaaaaat that's bullshit, you can crossfire 290X with a 290, you can crossfire 290 with a 390 (although this indeed is the same chip)

That isn't true what he said.

You can crossfire a R9 290 with a R9 290x with a R9 390 or with a R9 390x since they ALL use the same Hawaii GPU.

They will act the lower one of the bunch (So a R9 290)

Like I said, only GPU's with the same chip. OP didn't specify a GPU: "Newer GPU's"

So is a 390/290 crossfire worth it. I already have 1 290. this would be christmas, i literally have nothing to ask for so an extra gpu sounds good honestly.

Names of them do make me suspect the architecture deep inside is the same

?????

1st off you said "Nope"

Then you said you can SLI with GPU's with the same chip (Also not true)

And then you slap crossfire into this

With SLI, the card has to be the same model and the same chip. You can SLI a 980ti with a 980ti, but you cannot SLI a 980ti with a Titan X.

With XFire, the Card can be a different model and generation as long as it has the same chip. You can XFire a HD 7970 with a R9 280, but you cannot XFire a R9 280 with a R9 285.

The R9 290, R9 290x, R9 390 and R9 390x all use the same chip.

Yeah, it's worth it. You use the 390 as your main card and enable the 290 only in games that use it

That's exactly what I said? "Same chip"? You just explained it more thoroughly.

Once again, OP did not specify a GPU. "Newer GPU's". A new GPU can be a 980ti for all that matters.

I literally only play Arma 3. Pretty sure that will utilize both Gpu's but my i7-4770k literally maxes out at 50% usuage on the game anyway due to bad optimization so im not sure.

You ask or you assume he is talking about the newer version of the same card. (which he is)

Or I can skip an unnecessary step and go straight to the final answer. Which is still correct.
