Still not 100% on which power supply to get!

Hayzeon
Go to solution Solved by Ling,

650W is plently, and no it won't cause any issues at all. I'm using a 750W personally, and I only have 1 graphics card. You could lower the PSU, but you also want to allow for any potential addition of another graphics card (or a more beefy one) in the future.

Ok, so I'm pretty sure that the build doesn't have any bottlenecking issues (please tell me if you can see any) but the only component I'm still not 100% certain of is the power supply. I have done some research but I'm still confused. Are there any other reasons it is bad to get a power supply that has way too much power apart from "It uses more power than needed".

Also Im going to be using a backlit keyboards and mouse , led strips and no doubt charging 2 or 3 devices from it, with the occasional external drive ect.

Here is what I have so far: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/2dznzy

Thanks

Hayzeon

650W would be more than enough.

So what? 750W leaves more room for upgrades and doesn't hurt.

What kind of upgrades? even If he upgrades the processor, Water cooler, ads another SSD and HDD and ODD he will still have plenty of room over.

A graphics card upgrade for instance. He can do anything and he loses nothing on getting a higher-wattage power supply

So you mean add another R9 390? If so it won't be enough even with an 750W PSU. Even if he changes the GPU for an Fury X, GTX 980ti, or Titan X he will still have plenty of room left with an 650W PSU.

You do not know what the future brings. Maybe he'll buy two next-gen GPUs? ever thought of that? Pascal is going to be here in less than a year, same for Arctic Islands.

I agree with you on that one but that doesn't mean they will use 300+ Watts. They're trying to make powerful cards that hopefully will consume less more power than the previous generation. Even when the Pascal GPU's are coming out i don't think he will need a 750W PSU for that. But hey what do we know they're not out yet.

The only cheaper PSU worth getthing within that price range is this: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1650gts3x or the same priced seasonic, but since XFX is seasonic, it's basically the same.

And it's non-modular, with the EVGA B2, which also is a quality unit, he pays 10 AUD more for 100W more and the PSU being semi-modular, that is why I picked it, a negligible price difference for semi-modular cables and 100 Watts more? I'd take it

For the price it is a good deal. But if there were cheaper PSU for 650W I would ge them instead. There was only one PSU for a low price, which is 700W but not modular. http://www.megabuy.com.au/antec-vp700p-700w-psu-p562845.html

Don't just look at the cheapest PSU that should be good when you're looking for one, sometimes the same PSUs but with higher-wattage cost like 2-5$ more, it's worth it to pay such little amount to get 100W extra headroom since the PSU is not something you change every two years like a GPU

The PSU I showed you isn't a bad one. I know that there are some PSU's that have more wattage for couple of dollars more but there are unfortuantely none in Australia.

It might be good, I don't know that much about power supplies. I tend to stick to trusted, reliable brands/units, XFX, EVGA (excluding some lower-end units), SuperFlower, Seasonic and Be Quiet! Are my usual choices depending on location and pricing. I do not like Corsair PSUs, they're pretty good but too pricey. You can get the same for less.

I always stick with Antec, EVGA, SeaSonic, XFX and Corsair. I have Corsair RM Series myself which are very good PSU's. But yes there are PSU's that are very good for a lower pricetag.

I also use a Corsair PSU, TX650 V2, it's made by Seasonic anyway. Antec has some units that aren't good, while you can't go wrong with anything XFX offers, they're also usually cheaper so that's why I like them so much
