Overclocking, Help! Please!

Go to solution Solved by The Official Czex,

Good voltage for 4.5 ghz? it says the auto is 1.088. I heard someone say just put it at 1.25 and leave it.

1.3 is safe.

I purchased a 4790k and Maximus vii Hero, I've been trying to get an overclock on my cpu. Yesterday i took the multiplier and ramped it up to 44 (4.4ghz) and left the voltage on auto. I was assuming that the "Auto" voltage would do just fine because the cpu turbos at 4.4ghz anyways. After I tried the overclock, my computer started turning on for a second or two and then turned right back off, it repeated turning on and off for 5-7 minutes until I held down the power button and it shut off completely. After I started it up again, it gave me the "Overclock Failed" error, so I reset all the bios settings to defaults. It's working fine now at 4.0ghz. I ran an AIDA64 stress test for a couple of minutes and everything seems to be stable, I want to try and overclock again, but im kinda scared of the computer ruining something by turning on and off like that.

Thanks in advanced!

Yeah sounds like it was just unstable, do it manually its not very hard just set a good voltage and see how far it will go until it crashes.

Don't use auto voltage of any variety (including adaptive and software OC's) while overclocking. Change it to manual, key in your voltage, and perform your stress tests. This is critical, if you leave voltage on auto chances are the MOBO will ramp up the core voltage as soon as the CPU receives a load from a stress test, you will either be overvolting or overheating your CPU (it will thermal throttle at 90C, completely shut down at 100C).

Okay sounds good! What should i do if it starts turning on and off again? I heard it can screw up the BIOS.

If it doesnt boot after the second reset (it turns on for a few seconds and shuts right back up without seeing a POST screen) then shut it off on the PSU, wait until any l.e.d.'s on the motherboard go out (maybe another 5 seconds after turning the psu switch off) and then turn it back on and power it up and see if it boots up and tweak the OC some more. If it doesn't boot up after attempting that a couple times then clear CMOS.

If you screw up the BIOS, just reset CMOS by removing the CMOS battery and putting it back in.

Just got a 4.6 ghz overclock stable at 1.25 volts! Ran AIDA64 for 5 minutes and got a maximum of 67c and about an average of 55c. Thank you to everyone that helped! You guys are awesome!
