If windows 10 on a surface 3 is the same as a laptop is 4GB ok for a laptop now?

I used to think that 4GB of ram wasn't enough for general use and would recommend people get 8GB as 4Gb would chug with multiple tabs and apps open.  But the Surface 3 tablets come with 2GB and 4GB as the high end and work very well and it seems they are running desktop windows 10.  The fact that they offer 2GB and 4GB as the high end running desktop windows 10 made me reconsider.

Has windows 10 lowered the amount of RAM you need for day to day tasks?  Is 4Gb now enough for browsing the web in multiple tabs, downloading etc

The reason I ask is I just bought (and can still return) an i5 5200u based laptop but it only had 4GB RAM.  I figured I would take the bottom case off and slap 8GB in there.  Now it looks like you have to go in from the top which looks dodgy (lots of connectors that could break on the way in and out).  I am wondering if 4GB is enough now.

For basic browsing and office, sure, you can always add more later

The Surface series from Microsoft does NOT have upgradable ram; it's soldered onto the motherboard. Additionally, removing the screen and micro soldering more memory modules to the logic board super-voids your warranty, is likely not to work, and will almost certainly crack your screen. If the computer is in an Ultrabook form factor, then the RAM may be soldered onto the motherboard. Even if it's super thin, the RAM may be soldered on. Check before you void your warranty, as many manufacturers do not warrant memory upgrades by prying up the upper case. If you're still intent on upgrading, use a spudger to pry up the top cover from the front. Move around all four corners before lifting the upper case. If you don't have a spudger, then you can carefully use a flathead screwdriver, but this will damage your case.

Ah I see I wasn't clear.  The laptop I just bought for my parents is an HP 250 G4.  I thought that when it got here I would take off the bottom and put an 8GB stick in there.  However I saw a teardown of a G2 online and you have to go in from the top and take off the keyboard and unscrew the motherboard to get at the bottom.  So that could be the case too with the G4.  Seeing the reviews of the surface 3 2gb and 4gb models as good performers made me wonder whether it would be ok to leave the HP laptop with 4GB and not go into it at all.

It's not lowered it no.  The minimum specification for Win 10 (64 bit) is 2 GB obviouslly more is better (up to a point) so 4 should be ample.

Just don't run away with the idea that you will be able to have a thousand tabs open in Chrome. ;)

One of my friend using 1GB RAM with Windows 10. It's fine. He use it to watch movies and edit documents. It's a 32 bit OS.

I use 2GB RAM with Windows 10 Pro. No probs! :D
