Slight spill of liquid on laptop

Go to solution Solved by German_John,

Hey guys, quick update:

I undid all the screws and opened the bottom chassis with some tools (I couldn't completely remove, the clips on the back appear to be stuck/I'm too afraid to break them), put it in front of a badass fan (some old vornado, in case you know these - yes, I dropped it - yes, I did feel a lot like Linus with the XPS13) for two days, just started it and, well, absolutely everything works. It freaked out over the drive because of my hard shutdown, but even the HDMI port (which I had suspected might be broken as the monitor disconnected immediately, but apparently the glass just undid the cable)

So yeah, all is well and thanks a lot for your help! :)

Hey guys,

I just spilt some beer on my laptop. It wasn't much (most went on the desk, luckily), and was mainly on the monitor. The laptop kept running. I immediately turned it off, wiped off the liquid with a towel (some on the monitor and very little on one speaker grill and the aluminium chassis)

Is there anything else I should do? Wait 24 hours as is usually recommended, crack it open and ventilate that thing or just throw a good fan in front of it and wait overnight?

I really can't have this thing break :/

Cheers,

John

I'd wait as long as is feasible with dry air blowing over it.

Sig under construction.

rotate it to allow the liquid to escape and leave it a good 24/48h.

These laptop panels are pretty much sealed and can resist a little spill, if nothing got into the laptop and onto the motherboard it should be alright.

If you spilled something on the keyboard that would be a problem.

Thanks, will do that. I think I have grilled my HDMI port... is there any known fix for that/can that be fixed be a professional? :/

I saw a tiny spill on the speaker grill (not the speaker hole though, nothing on the keyboard as far as I can tell.

On a sidenote, my brother spilt shit all over his keyboard TWICE now and his laptop is still working. A key busted the top, but that's it. Amazing luck.

my mom and dad both each spilled a cup of coffee on my laptop once while it was open and on, they didnt bother to turn it off. nothing happened to it except for the keyboard dying on it.

i would suggest to open it up and be sure that the motherboard is fine and that anything spilled on it will not start to corrode which is the problem you will face if something did get inside.

Please Quote so i know you have replied. | If we have provided a solution to your problem mark it with answer found.

And also please read the COC and avoid the embarrassment and lecture that will ensue.

I'd like to avoid opening it. The Y50 is notorious for not opening very well... I might give it shot, seeing how there's a tiny lip on the chassis.

Yeh, I'm kinda hoping I didn't fuck anything up. Definitly will be more careful with drinks at my desk now. Laptops these days seem to be pretty resistant to water.

Also, something I bought was an IKEA desk with build it drink holders (And three monitor capability) Don't know the exact number but something to think of if you are getting a new desk.
