How to make hard drive quieter?

legend8887

As you may or may not know, the S340 has no proper mount for your hard drives so they're very loud because there are not anti-vibration parts in it. What can I do to make my hard drive quieter inside my case?

Turn it off?

I would create my own anti-vibration stuff. As long as it's not going to impede airflow much, stick some rubber or something between the drive and the cage or something.

Are you sure it's the drive that you can hear?

If it's abnormally loud the drive might be dying. I don't know.

Sig under construction.

Maybe in the hardware store you can find those screws with rubber parts or just buy rubber parts

I hate stupid answers like "turn it off"

I know it is the drive and no, it's not dying.

Did you simply ignore my suggestion?

Was going to suggest suspending the HDDs with thick rubber bands, the band just need to be twisted a few times, will hold just fine.

Buuut, thought I'd better look up the S340 and sure enough, no 5.25 bays. :/

I wouldn't recommend that because the rubber will degrade eventually, especially in a warm environment. In my case most fans were attached with rubber bands and after eight months about half of them had failed. I have since switched to silicone rubber bands. Weirdly the only bands made of silicone rubber are made for doing up horse's manes for some reason. They're very short, so mounting a hdd with them is impractical at best.

A better solution is to get an aftermarket hdd sled, glue it to a piece of soft material like sponge or something, and glue that to your case.

I cannot be held responsible for any bad advice given.

I've no idea why the world is afraid of 3D-printed guns when clearly 3D-printed crossbows would be more practical for now.

My rig: The StealthRay. Plans for a newer, better version of its mufflers are already being made.

Get some rubber washers that are a touch bigger than the scews but quite thin and put them on.

I'm running three drives suspended in thick rubber bands. Soon three years running without issues. The computer I had prior, same setup with two drives. Ran for four and a half years without failing.

Never tried using it on fans though. And the room temperature is always between 18 to 28'ish degrees celsius. It may spike during summer with some mid 30s.

Maybe it's better rubber than what I had.

Cheapest way to mount is cardboard and double sided tape.

By layering it you drastically decrease the vibrations.

You can also paint it black so it is not noticeable.

Alternative is just to use some rubber you find instead of the cardboard.
