Workstation build log.

SlowMixit

I'm building new workstation for work and gaming in tight budget, you might find some surprises what i will fit into my workstation build with only budget of 1330euros (around 1400 USD).

I ordered the parts today and below is the list.

CPU :

- Intel Xeon E5 2670 v3 - 12 core

- Thermalright True Spirit 140 BW rev.a CPU cooler

Mainboard :

- Asus X99-A

RAM Memory :

- 16Gb of Kingston HyperX Fury DDR4-2133 CL14

Graphics Card :

- Inno3D GTX970 Hérculez X2 OC

Storage :

- 480Gb Crucial BX200 SSD

- 2x 2Tb Western Digital Green HDD (backups)

Power Supply :

- Fractal Tesla R2 500W PSU

Case :

- Phanteks Enthoo Pro M -windowed

PC Part Picker : http://pcpartpicker.com/p/MhN9kL

My old parts im going to use in the build : 3 x Samsung 24" PLS monitors, Razer Naga 2014, Razer Blackwidow Stealth

Only thing in my build im not shure of is that power supply so i might switch it to SuperFlower, Corsair or to Seasonic, it's filled with second grade capacitors and might not be enough to run E5 2670 v3 on full steam same time with overclocked GTX970, but i got it dirt cheap (30euros or around 35 us dollars) from Black Friday sales so why not to give it a go.

At one point i was considering Asus X99-M WS and mATX case but i didnt think it was worth the extra 50 or so euros.

Will be posting pics soon as parts start to arrive, most parts should arrive sometime next week, pics are must soon as they arrive since this is build log.

Succestions and feedback is welcome..

Dont worry, i will eventually use it as hammer. Also it was in Black Friday discount for mere 250 euros or 264 dollars how i could refuse? Could have got Gigabyte 970 for 300euros.

Looks pretty solid except for the PSU and possibly the GPU (Never heard of Inno3D before so I can't really say.) Depending on your use case a bit more RAM could possibly help or even just purely for a RAM disk so that things are crazy fast.

Also could you post up a cinebench score when you get your rig assembled. I've been looking at getting two of those E5 2670v3's for a compute server.

CPU: Intel i7 - 5820k @ 4.5GHz, Cooler: Corsair H80i, Motherboard: MSI X99S Gaming 7, RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 2666MHz CL16,

GPU: ASUS GTX 980 Strix, Case: Corsair 900D, PSU: Corsair AX860i 860W, Keyboard: Logitech G19, Mouse: Corsair M95, Storage: Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD, WD 1.5TB Black

Display: BenQ XL2730Z 2560x1440 144Hz

PSU is on the limits, never used Inno3D before but if it brakes up i will send it to warranty and sell it asap it returns and switch to either Asus, EVGA or Gigabyte 980 card, same time upgrading psu to Corsair RMi 750 or SuperFlower Leadex.

Im currently using G751JT laptop with 32Gb ram, never really used more than 10-14Gb of it so i guess 16Gb is good enough, but since that mainboard has got 8 slots its easy to upgrade later.

I will post all benchmarks etc.. from whole machine when i get it assembled, R11.5 and R15 Cinebench are amongst the first to test out.

I did consider going to Asus Z10PA-D8 mainboard but that second cpu would have made my budget to sky rocket even tough i think i could have got second one also with around 300 euros.

I did consider, how ever i got that one so cheap i couldnt resist, if load power is getting anywhere near 80%+ i will replace it with at least 650W psu.

you might find some surprises what i will fit into my workstation build with only budget of 1330euros (around 1400 USD).

I am surprised O.o... yea you have some iffy brands (that GPU) but still surprising for that budget because unless I'm looking at the wrong cpu your cpu alone would bust the budget.

Now, im going to do some performance tests on the CPU, might also do small overclock on it, something like 103-105Mhz base clock.

First benchmarks, stock.

Wonder why Cinebench detects the CPU incorrectly, yet CPU-Z detects it correctly.

Maybe it's because the CPU is running old microcode, intel disabled TSX with microcode patch long time ago.

Cinebench R11.5 and Cinebench R15

What the... really? 3667Mhz burst clock??

That PSU though, verified those +12v rail readings with multimeter, +12v rail is running at 11.1volts, way out of ATX spec, need to recheck with better multimeter to verify, those volts and pulling around 350-400W from wall, i think ill buy Superflower Leadex 650, EVGA SuperNova G2 650 or Corsair RM650i.

Gaming and other benchmarks are coming soon..

Yeah i think i will buy the Supernova G2, its cheapest of the bunch and have nearly identical performance and components are good as in Leadex.

Camera and harddrives arrived, i switched the harddrives to Western Digital Blacks since i got deal on them from friend:

I failed on taking the photos, used to shoot with ISO of 100, now i need go higer since this camera performs well at 800-1600 ISO.

Still figuring out this camera, i think shots are getting much better.

Need figure out this distortion on pictures (straight lines are looking bent), most likely i need shoot the picture from further away..

Yes soon as new fans, psu and cable extensions arrive im removing the random wire going to front panel and that ugly atx 24pin.

I'm in need of your oppinion on the fan (quality etc..) since i couldnt find Orange Corsair LED fans.

Basicly im choosing betwean these 3 fans :

http://www.jimms.fi/fi/Product/Show/66951/ph-f140ts-or/phanteks-140-x-140-x-25mm-ph-f140ts-or-premium-case-fan-oranssi

http://www.jimms.fi/fi/Product/Show/65254/cf-v14h/cougar-vortex-hdb-kotelotuuletin-140x140x25mm-3-pin-16_4-dba-musta-oranssi

http://www.jimms.fi/fi/Product/Show/96587/bff-blf-p14025o-rp/bitfenix-spectre-led-pwm-fan-140mm-oranssi

I find BitFenix one to be otherwise best exept that it's led is yellowish and not true orange, Cougar fan im not about the quality even tough it's expensive and Phanteks im not shure about the white frame in the fan and quality.

I'm going with either Black-Orange CableMod or White-Orange custom cables or extensions.

Edit :

I ordered CableMod Black-Orange Basic cable kit from CableMod so thats what i go with ( https://store.cablemod.com/product/cablemod-basic-cable-extension-kit-66-pin-series-black-orange/ )

Also ordered PlastiDip Orange paint for mainboard covers and heatsink accents.
