Updating Motherboard Questions

yoshiii

Hello,

I built a computer using a MSI Gaming 7 motherboard.  I am using a i7 4790k cpu.  My bios is 1.60 from last year.

Is it a good idea to update to the lastest bios?

I would update to the latest revision.

Ok.

Just curious, why would it be good to update to the latest version?

I changed my mind. I don't think you'll need to update. PCPartPicker doesn't say anything about incompatibilities nor do MSI's Release Notes for their BIOSes state anything past 1.6 for support for Haswell Refesh.

Ok, so the latest bios is for other things?

BIOS updates are for fixes. I have the same mobo and CPU, and am running BIOS version 1.9. 1.B is the latest revision.

Looking at version 1.8, it states that it adds microcode that allows it to support newer Intel CPUs which I assume is Haswell Refresh. The BIOS can be found here: http://download.msi.com/bos_exe/7916v18.zip

They're currently running 1.6 which I think is too low for support for Haswell Refresh.

It depends on if we're talking about a z97 or z87 board. I have the z97 board, so it just works. If he knows his bios revision, I would assume he's got it working.

Or he's using another CPU before Haswell Refresh and decided to upgrade.

Isn't it a risky process?

Or is the Gaming 7 one of those motherboards where you can restore or switch the BIOS?

It is. Dual BIOS Chips BB.

Z 97 board

Then it just works.

I'd update the BIOS anyways, but its not needed.

Congrats on the choice of board. I'm loving mine.

Ok so its barely just working?  I might build a hackentosh, some of the things I need in bios is in later updates.

Should I download the update and install it or use MSI Live and let it install it?

What do I need to do to update the bios?

I meant its working fine.

Download the latest update from their site, plop it on a USB, go into the BIOS, and install it.
