Graphics Card Issue (GTX 860M in laptop)

unleashedtails

I bought a Lenovo y50 (non 4k) with GTX 860M 2gb dedicated graphics card and was enjoying it until last month. A few issues with the graphics card poped up simultaneously, in chronological order they are:

- Rocket League (Your video card does not support alpha blending with floating point render targets (D3DFMT_A16B16G16R16F), which is requqired to run this game. Exiting...)

- The game works, but lags, after installing the newest driver from NVIDIA website

- Geforce experience saying I have updates to instal even though the driver version is identical to the one from NVIDIA's website

- GTA V, used to be able to run at 60 fps at low-mid settings, detecting I have a 4gb Vram and now runs at 5 fps wether I use the full 4gb of Vram or 1gb of Vram

- Installing the driver with geforce experience results in not being able to open games

- Reinstalling the newest driver from NVIDIA website allows GTA V at 5fps; Geforce experience saying I have updates to instal even though the driver version is identical to the one from  NVIDIA's website and Rocket League at 50 fps with lowest settings

- GPUZ detecting 0 clock speed and memory speed

- MSI afterburner not detecting graphics card

- After fully uninstalling all NVIDA graphics card related programs and reinstalling them, same problem occurs

Any idea what is happening? If no one knows, would restoring to factory settings work?

p.s. everything else also seems to work fine, just when it comes to playing games there are problems

That is very odd. To be honest, you have done most of the things I was going to tell you to do.

Because of the nature of the problem, I doubt a windows reinstall would help.

Could you check the bios to see if there are any settings for the dedicated gpu

No need, everything looks like its wroking again. Now just need to do some "testing" by playing games. Also does this mean I should not update drivers ever?

Welcome to Nvidia's magical world of broken drivers. The next time someone says AMD have crap drivers, give them a big one-finger salute :)

Not to be too much a fan boy, but I do like NVIDIA more than AMD, thanks anyway!

Well - expect a new working driver in a year or so ^_^ - AMD laptop users don't seem to be having these issues

it's the driver - the last stable laptop driver is 355.60 - all others are highly volatile

355.60 is highly volatile. It and 355.98 are simply less highly volatile than 350.12, 352.86, 353.00, 353.06, 353.30 (LITERALLY the same driver as 353.06, except a new name with Arkham Knight's initial SLI profile added, which could have been done through a silent GFE update and didn't require a driver), 353.62, 355.82, 355.83, 358.50, 358.87, 358.91 and 359.00.

For a specific user, 358.50 might be more stable than both 355.60 and 355.98. It's a roulette. The two I listed are what I perceived by reading their complaint forums and the people complaining about their desktops and laptops on NBR and nVidia's forums to be the least problematic for a majority of users, with 355.60 having a slight edge in usability.

IF 355.60 or 355.98 do not work for a user, they might as well try drivers at random to see what works if they need a newer driver.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

THE INFORMATION GUIDES: SLI INFORMATION || vRAM INFORMATION || MOBILE i7 CPU INFORMATION || Maybe more someday

Driver roulette - sponsored by Nvidia!
