alright so the macho120 is the heatsink for me

Overall very good. Easy to install. I also recommend to buy a decent paste to the cooler (like Arctic Silver 5).

So I am thinking of upgrading my stock heat sink to a better heat sink, does anyone know of any good heat sinks that would work with an amd fx chip that are silent but effective

What is Your case? I'd recommend Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo but I do not know if it will fit into Your case.

Also, Thermalright have verry good air coolers (like HR-02 Macho Rev.b or Macho 120 Rev. A)

It has to be air because water coolers won't fit in my case

Maximum CPU Heatsink up to 160mm. Not bad, but Cooler Master 212 Evo has 159 mm which can be problem.

Check out Thermalright Macho 120 Rev. A. It's a verry  good cooler, and it will fit into Your case without any concern.

Very good and efficient cooler. But it has a height of 163 cm. This will not fit into Your case. Unless You going to change it for something bigger.

so if i get the macho120 will it be compatible with an amd fx chip and will I be able to overclock the chip

Supported sockets for amd: AMD: Socket AM2/AM2+/AM3/AM3+/FM1/FM2/FM2+

And yes. Good for overclocking.
