Newbie post: the more advice the better! Thank you!

2161799B

Hello,

Nice to meet everyone. I am very new so sorry if I am ambiguous or just sound crazy.

1. Budget & Location

USA!!USA!! sorry could not help it. My budget is around $1000 the most I am willing to go for is $1500 but that being said i would really like to keep it under $1000 only because that is more money in the bank (Microsoft office/other software needed).

2. Aim
Here is where my woes begin. The main purpose of this desktop is for data/statistics/simulations/video editing/coding(java, C, C++) and also maybe some 3D modeling (basically a scientific computer or server if my research is correct). Now I do also like to decompress by playing a video game, specifically total war. So I would also like the PC I build to be able to handle this game if that is possible.  Also if it can be built for upgrades later that would be an added benefit but is not necessary.

3. Monitors
None. Using a 32 inch 1080p TV with HDMI or at least that is the plan.

4. Peripherals
I already have a keyboard, mouse and headset. I will need a OS (not sure which is best to go with windows or download for free one of the Linux OS).

5. Why are you upgrading?

I am not upgrading. I am building my first...EVER!

I would also like to add that I would like to put the game on my 1TB external hard-drive so nothing gets messed up but i think it is on steam so that might not be a problem. Also for extra storage I have a laptop HP G60 or a extra screen and another laptop which would have the same use, that is just a refurbished notebook....still has windows xp business ha. I have looked at some of the high end software like Matlab but I do not think I will buy something like that ($2100 for a single license!). I will stick to using the library for those things.

Here are the  recommended specs of the last Total war Rome 2 they are coming out with Total war Warhammer but have not released the specs for it.

OS: Windows 7 / Windows 8

Processor:2nd Generation Intel Core i5 processor (or greater)

Memory: 4GB RAM

Graphics:1024 MB DirectX 11 compatible graphics card.

DirectX®:11

Hard Drive:35 GB HD space

Screen Resolution: 1920x10

Thank you very much for your time and consideration I appreciate it a lot! The last thing I will mention is please ask questions and also I am really just looking for advice on where to begin, if there is a book I can read then please suggest it. If you do suggest a list of products please explain why and how those components are the best bang for my buck in what I am looking for, I feel like half the fun in this is the research, and learning. I just do not know where to start! But I am going to be building this in the next 3 days and have no bias on any brand.

Have a good day and Thank you again!

PS: I also posted on the top thread, sorry was not sure where to post

Thank you for the quick reply. Nope no specific color scheme just as long as it works and I have been using the laptop i mentioned. All other PC's belong to other family members so i would not feel comfy using parts from those

Good point. Add $85~ (or $20 depending where you get it) and call it a day :D (OP says he can go up to $1500 total cost)

From what I have looked at that is not one of the requirements.

Left a little bit of space for whatever software you need to buy. Also assuming you need cuda.

Hey thank you  for the reply so, I am a newbie at this so what i was really raking my brain about was the CPU. So why this CPU? Otherwise the list is very appreciated! If there is a video or book like I said I would be more than happy to read it or watch it so you don't have to waste your time typing and explaining it to me.

Don't worry about it. From what I can tell, most of the things you're going to be using the cpu for take advantage of more threads, this cpu having 8 of them. It also is practically an I7 without an igpu for $60ish less. Thus, it's a relatively cheap cpu, that'll perform great for what you need it to do.

Thank you for your answer and the awesome responses on this. I guess the last question I have is while i have read what all the components of a PC do. I am not savvy enough to be able to look at the builds suggested here and say well here this will be a problem or I am limited here. Otherwise I am going to get started on ordering these parts and then watching and reading more to make sure I do not mess anything up.
