What is the next best below the r9 380?

JohnnyIsHere

Heyy so this is my build http://nz.pcpartpicker.com/p/dRKYsY

and i want it to be cheaper.. but idk how so probs sticking with it..

Though If i feel like getting the i5-6400 instead i was wondering if there is a gpu not much worse than the r9 380 and is like $50 or more cheaper :)

Thanks

The GTX 960 4GB and GTX 960 2GB would be your next two steps down to save a few bucks. I'd probably step down to the 960 to fit an i5 into your budget. You can get a 2GB model as cheap as $304 NZ, though I'd try really hard to fit a 4GB model like this into your budget with the i5.

Want a 380 type performance for cheap as hell.

Buy a used HD7950/HD7950/R9-280 (All of these cards are the SAME card, just before the refresh's that give slightly higher clocks, thats all, and you can push those clocks yourself)

Once you OC the HD7950 to the same/similar clocks (eg: 1000/1250 or 1100/1350) depending on what you card can handle... then your at 380 performance for under $100-150. (Depending what country you get it from)

Risks are obvious.... so take that into account.

HD7950 Stock VS R9-280 stock. (380) aint that far ahead from the 280, if AT ALL, they are so close in games you'd not even notice)

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1033?vs=1332

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I'd NOT buy a 2gb card ever again. Its not that its not gunna work, it limits your options.

Games TODAY can cap it out (within reason, pushing Batman on sub2GB cards is HORRENDOUS, yet games like BF4 are fine)

Never again would I recommend a GAMER get a 2GB Vram card for todays gaming needs.

GTX 580 - From YEARS AGO, still has balls to power games fine, yet the 1.5GB of Vram stops games allowing it to be used properly.

Limiting abilities/technologies it actually has enough power to drive..... but wont be enabled,....cos Vram limits.

2GB isn't much anymore, I believe Nvidia has discontinued the 2GB model of the GTX 960. 3GB is probably a new sweet spot now, but since modern cards (e.g. current generation) are either 2GB, 4GB, or 6GB, might as well go with the 4GB card if at all possible.

Eh, the GTX 580 isn't that powerful, it traded blows with the 660 back when the 660 was launched and you didn't have the high vram usage you do now. But it's undeniable now, games really seem to want 2.5GB or more, though Arkham Knight doesn't even like 4GB cards, fuck that game. It still makes me laugh that the two most GPU intensive games I have, Witcher 3 and Crysis 3, tap out at 1.8 GB usage at 1080p on my 970 though.

I didn't claim that.

I said in the last section the 380 aint that far off the HD7950/280, not that its the same.

it's about 10% better than a 280 - not to mention more VRAM, worlds better tessellation and more efficient design

Yeah I did over-exaggerate the 580 for modern games, to re-clarify.... my main point is that while it can be used, the Vram issue is a big limiting factor for that particular GPU in modern games.
