conflicting psu infromation, first built, help!

Go to solution Solved by TheRandomness,

550W would be ideal for that build (or 600W if you plan to overclock). http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/406160-psu-ranking-and-tiers/ Pick a PSU from tier 1 or 2 on that list that's still in your budget.

Hey there!

I have gone on multiple websites trying to figure out about power supplies and I have gotten a lot of different answers on what I need. I got a lot of different answer varying on brand and wattage from 427watt all the way to 750!

the computer parts I have so far are

cpu: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz LGA 1150

The parts I am buying next are :
sound card( potentially) : Creative PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty (couldn't find a link for this one)

the only issue is that I dont know if 500 W is enough, pc part picker told me i only needed 427w. The specs in the graphics card link i listed said i needed a 500 watt, and 2 other websites said i need at least a 750W. i am planning to overclock the cpu, and graphics card.

This is my first computer, and kind of my dream computer at the same time, and I would hate to buy a powersupply that isnt enough, and I would also hate if i bought a powersupply that is too powerful and unneccessary and just waste money

Thank you for any, and all of your help!

what i usually suggest is to piece out your build on http://pcpartpicker.com/

it'll give you an estimated wattage, but i suggest getting some headroom for the future.

add about 10-20% to the wattage listed on pcpp

add your own level of extra headroom to that (going for a ridiculously overkill psu will make it sit pretty much idle, meaning it kicks out no heat, and doesnt have to ramp up its fan)

find the psu closest to that wattage that applies to your preferences and availability. (80+ rating, color, modular/semi/not, how much quality you want)

the computer parts I have so far are

motherboard: ASRock Z97 Extreme4 LGA 1150 ATX Intel Motherboard

cpu: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz LGA 1150

Hard drive: WD Desktop Mainstream 1TB 7,200 RPM SATA III 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive WDBH2D0010HNC-NRSN

The parts I am buying next are :

graphics card:EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC GAMING Video Card w/ ACX 2.0 Silent Cooling

Ram:Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL9 Dual Channel Desktop Memory Kit (Two 4GB Memory Modules)

sound card( potentially) : Creative PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty (couldn't find a link for this one)

power supply: the one i was considering was :EVGA 500 W1 80+, 500W Continuous Power, 3 Year Warranty Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR

Holy hell please do not use that PSU!!! Then pair your 390 with an EVGA G2/GS/GQ/B2. Expect an i7 and 390X with overclocked to hit about 420W under load.

i did check on pc part picker, i stated it told me i needed like 427 w, but other sites told me i needed up to 750w, wich is where my confusion came from

what is wrong with the psu? O.o is it a bad brand? i thought since it was evga, it would be ok. and since it is 500w

should i be getting a 750w powersupply if it wont even hit 427w?

550W would be fine if you don't plan to aggressively overclock. If you wish to overclock a 600-650W PSU would be good c:

Not all PSUs from EVGA are good. The W1 series is of low quality and should be avoided.

EVGA doesn't "make" the PSUs, they have OEMs to do that. They have lower price segments to hit certain budgets for people building low-end PCs. Thus, not every EVGA PSU is actually good which is why people end up with W1 series PSUs in systems with i7s and 290Xs. The GS/G2/GQ/B2 units are WAY better.
