What do you mean by "unusable"? Are you just trying to remove all data from the drive?

If you want to erase all the data, Download HirensBootCD, make it bootable on a usb or cd, open it on the computer with the HDD and select "Darik's Boot and Nuke". It will wipe all your data from the hard drive.

May I ask you why you are doing this? If you are selling it, you wouldn't make it unusable. If you're throwing it away, exterior damage shouldn't be a problem.

The drive still remains usable....

Open the drive up and remove all the internal components. Really easy to do, actually.

They have screws, you can open them. All you need to do is exposure the platters to air and a single piece of dust will ensure the next time the drive is used it will rip the surface apart. Its all you need to do and it wont show any damage externally. They are effectively sealed but breaking that seal sufficient to suck in dust is enough to severely damage it.
