Running an Ultrawide on a laptop. Possible?

Charkomangus

Heyho!

I've sold my old computer rig and I'm left with my ASUS G751JY laptop. It's got a mobile gtx980 but I'm unsure how well it would work for gaming with an ultra-wide, especially higher 1440p resolutions.

I'd use it mostly for coding, 3d animation and films but would love to be able to game on it.

What size and resolution would you guys recommend for being able to get the best experience?

PS: Thanks!

Heyho!

Is it the desktop 980 or the 980m? because there is a big difference

Will it work? yes, will it game? yes but probably not at high/ultra

Id say get a normal 16:9 1440p monitor, frankly I dont like ultrawide anyway but hey

It's the laptop so the much weaker gtx980m I'm afraid. I'll be building a desktop to better run the screen but in a year or two.

Could I ask why you don't like ultrawide screens? I'm collecting opinions. :D

Since monitors are the most easily transferrable upgrade in a rig, I would go for it.

I mean, I bought a 4K monitor, but I won't really benefit from using it for a while yet until I get a new set up (which I will be doing in a couple months time).

That's a good point. I'll be hopefully rich enough to build "the dream machine" in a year or two. Hope your setup works out awesomely!

it's still work just fine, but i still doubt to play AAA game smoothly on 1440p. maybe change resolution to 2560x1080 or lowering the detail will works  :)

Thanks for all the answers (even taco guy). I've decided to go for it. What remains is which one but I'll figure it out. Thanks again!
