Dual Xeon 771 (no hacksaw required)

f22luke

I really enjoyed Linus's video "Under $150 Budget Gaming 8 Core CPU, Motherboard & 16GB RAM" which recently aired on Vessel and now YouTube.  But Linus should be charged with crimes against humanity for his role in what happened at 2:55 in the video.

Hospitals everywhere must be teeming with concussion patients or broken noses from epic face-palms.

After some ebay browsing, I decided to put one of my own together. Unlike Linus this is not going to be used for gaming. I am mainly going to use if for messing around with different VMs and such.

Current state of build:

I just ordered all the parts:

Motherboard: HP XW8600 Workstation Dual LGA 771 Server System Motherboard 480024-001 Price: $34.39  Pictures

CPUs: 2 Intel Xeon E5440 2.83GHz/12M/1333MHz Quad-Core Processors SLBBJ Price: $29.99

Update! CPU cooler: HP XW8600 XW6600 CPU Heatsink Fan 446358-001 ---------------------------------------------- Pictures

CPU cooler: 2 Pack Cooljag DAL-D 2U Server CPU Cooler Heatsinks Fan Price: $29.99 ----------------------------- Pictures

Memory: Micron 16GB 4X4GB 2RX4 PC2-5300F DDR2 667MHZ ECC Fully Buffered Price: $32.98

Case: Rosewill RSV-L4412 4U Rackmount Server Chassis 12 SATA / SAS Hot-Swap Drives Price: $174.99 ---- Pictures

PSU: Rosewill Hive-750 Price after rebate: $39.99   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pictures

GPU: I technically don't need one but I have a 750ti that i'm not using so it will go in the build to at least for now.

Storage: 4 Seagate Cheetah T10 ST3300555SS 300GB 10k/15k 3.5" SAS HDD and I will use my two WD velociraptors as boot drives

If all goes well it should be a fun experiment. I have never really messed around with "server grade" parts before so it's all up in the air. Please chime in here if you have any feedback or suggestions.

Pictures will come as I get the parts.  I'll do a post for each part and then update this post with pictures once the whole thing is done,  Cheers

This sounds fun! If I really had money to burn I'd get this and poke around with coding, VMs, ect. But I do not have the time nor money to do so.

Good luck, have fun!

I used to be quite active here.

@Decon is doing this now i think as well :D

.

I figured that I should do it before that video hits YouTube or else all the good deals would be taken. As it was I had a pair of x5450s sniped while they were in my shopping cart.

i wonder if this would do well with video rendering and editing

Hmm it would do ok with any workload that can be multi-threaded as Linus points out in the video these have new life with DX12 and Vulcan emphasizing multi thread workloads.  It also has the added benefit of ECC memory so less to go wrong in a multi hour render.

I would say that it depends on what you mean by well.  Yes it can do the things you mentioned and may even do some things better than an i5 but any modern i5 would crush it in a single threaded work load.

If you have certain benchmarks you would like for me to run just mention it and I will see what I can do when it's all finished.

Linus did a video about a $150 PC?! Now I need them monies!

Well technically that is for the cost of the motherboard and CPUs and nothing else, but still, amazing.

True I believe so, that video should be off Vessel in the next day or so for anyone who hasn't seen it

Don't think my 350W PSU would handle it...

Haha might, just pick up one of those EVGA 500 or 600 B power supplys, the things are so cheap right now and you might find better deals elsewhere

Don't forget cyber Monday if you have any parts left...

The only thing i'm missing is some storage.  Ive been looking around for some cheep drives if you know of any deals hit me up with them.  I don't have that much of a budget for it I was thinking of just going with four 1tb reds.

The power supply already made it! (way to go newegg) I posted some photos on imgur just of a brief unboxing of it. Before anyone says it's overkill no it's not. I pan on using this for all kinds of projects including populating all 12 bays. The HIVE series is a great value I've used it before in different builds and have always liked them.

The next items to arrive are the heatsinks.  My first impression was "man these are heavy".  Out of curiosity I put one on a postage scale and it came up 1 pound 13 ounces.  I think the ebay seller lost money sending these suckers to me.  The milled bottom is very nicely finished and it just feels solid all the way round.  The only thing I'm not sure about is the fan.  It's a 70mm 3pin fan.  When compared to other 70mm fans it's not bad but I'm withholding judgment till I plug them in and hear how they sound.  The nice thing is is that if I don't like them I can just buy a pair of 70mm fans to replace them as it's just a standard fan mount.  Enjoy the pics.....

Today I received the motherboard so things are getting interesting.

Right off the bat I notice something I hadn't seen before (see picture below) but the cpu fan headers have 5 pins.  This is some propietary HP garbage I'm reading up on what the different pins do so i can just get some pwm fans and mod them.

TiURRAZ.jpg

On a happy note it's not like Linus's board which didn't have any headers and this has quite a few fan headers spread around.

This board is loaded when it comes to PCIe expansion, with two 16x and three 8x that have notches in the backs to accommodate full size cards. @LinusTech this is how it should look:
