Should i upgrade fx 6300 to i5 4590?

Just a quick one,

do you think it is worth upgrading my FX 6300 to an i5 4590? I know Skylake is out but I've found a reasonably cheap 4590 so I'm quite tempted to go with that.

Current build is:

Fx 6300 - stock

R9 280

16 gb ram

Gigabyte 78LMT-USB 3

550 w 80+ Bronze

1tb HDD

120gb SSD

I'm thinking with a decent 1150 motherboard I can still get some longevity with the Intel chip and potentially Xfire or SLI and actually break into the higher tier (390x/980), oh and M2, and all the good stuff.

What are your thoughts?

Yes moving to an i5 would be a massive upgrade and if you are wanting to Xfire/SLI down the line it will remove the bottleneck that would be your 6300.

I'd go for the 4460, a couple hundred mhz won't amount to any noticeable performance increase

4590 on route...

Thank you all kindly for the little push.

Next question... a decent mobo that has all the trimmings for £100?

Yeah I managed to snag it for £115 on Amazon £119 with postage! I thought it is £15 cheaper than a 4460 and £58 quid cheaper than a 4690k, a tad much for my budget.

It is not as big of a jump as people are making it seem. At least make the jump to Skylake if your are upgrading or get the 4590k so you can overclock.

Edit: Also I see you have a R9 280, performance difference is going to be negligible and buying a new graphics card first would be a better option.

I've asked around a few places and consensus seems to sway towards a CPU/Mobo upgrade before GPU in the case of my current build. I didn't really know where to go in relation to GPU as I seemed to be limited by my PSU and a lot of  people have also said that the FX 6300 couldn't really handle much more than a R9 280...

I could get a 970 but the whole 3.5 Vram debacle but I'm not sure I could get anything wanting more juice.

Skylake would mean buying new ram, mobo and chip  for perhaps a little more performance but that option would have been a lot more expensive considering I picked up the 4590 for £119.

The new platform would have been cool but for just over £200 I'm hoping to be able to have a Cpu/mobo that could handle 980/390x and in the future Xfire or SLI Leaving me to only have to upgrade my PSU when I need to. Something I'm pretty sure my FX 6300 and 78LMT-USB 3 couldn't handle.
