Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO (32ohm)

johnt

So the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x and Beyerdynamic DT-770 PRO (32ohm) are on Prime Lightning sale later today and tomorrow morning. I've heard both of these come up a lot. Both are well reviewed (or completely hated), with the DT-770 edging out the M50x from what I've read.

I wasn't planning on buying new headphones this year, but the ones I am currently using at work are bothering me a lot. Currently I have a cheapo behind the head Philips that works okay... but they hurt after a brief time (<30 mins) and let's not even get into sound quality. It might be a good opportunity to upgrade with these sales.

Which one between the M50x and DT-770 would you recommend for wearing all day at a desk? Primarily for music listening.

Edit: The M30x is also on sale if anybody wants to chime in on that. The DT-990 is on sale too but I don't think I should use open ear headphones at work... I don't have any experience with open ear headphones. Thoughts? I'll likely buy an amp/dac to go with these. But at 32 ohm the DT-770 might not need it if I go with it.

DT-770 anyday, ATH-M50x hurt my ears too much clamp force and passive noise isolation, DT's are known for comfort and they sound way better.

That's what I'm leaning toward... I wouldn't even need an amp for 32 ohms... definite plus

Those headphones have somewhat different sound signatures and are both decent buys for the money. Many people find the treble on the 770s fatigueing while others will feel it adds more detail; Some will prefer slightly tamer bass bump in the M50s while others prefer the extra boom of the 770s etc. It will depend on which you prefer, so I'd heavily recommend trying them first. Also with the M50s replacing the pads with shure srh840 pads(HPAEC840) is a must for all day comfort.

Here's a comparison of the FR with a couple other closed headphones in that price range for good measure.

I replaced my pads with velour, also I think you're thinking off the DT 990 with the fatiguing treble. The DT 770's seems fine to me, but the DT 990's can take some time to get used too but are very good (maybe because I enjoy treble).

Wow that 770 chimes in at the top of the FR compared to other headphones. I have an issue with harsh speakers/headphones. My Klipsch speakers kill me at very high volumes... I don't want to repeat the experience with my headphones.

The Beyers will be ahead in comfort, that's for sure. You might check out the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus - they are a bargain at just $150 right now. None of the nasty treble found in the DT cans.

Looks like I'm going to buy a couple and keep the one that sounds best. There's no way I can decide based on a deal.

I picked up the M50x yesterday for $102 after tax. The 770 in 32 ohm and  250 ohm are on sale later today.
