Help with PS4 (w/BenQ XL2720Z)

So recently I've boughten a PS4 to get in on that Uncharted Action thinking that I can just use my computer monitor with the PS4... cause that's what everyone seems to be doing these days.

So I got this brand spankin new PS4 sitting pretty on my desk... connected it to my BenQ XL2720Z which works perfect with my gaming PC and my macbook... but I get nothing with the PS4....

I know a signal is going through because my monitor does not go on standby, rather it stay black and will flash every now and then... no ps4 logo no nothing... can't go into safe mode, well more like.. not sure if I am going into safe mode or not because after holding the power button, which should bring the ps4 into safe mode, the screen does not change.

I know it is not a problem with the HDMI cable nor the PS4 (took the PS4 back to the store to return it, they asked if they could check it, and it worked on their TVs)

I also know that people do use monitors with the PS4 (see first sentence of this post)... so I'm thinking the problem maybe with compatibility or maybe settings within the monitor itself?

Since this forum is the PC crowd.. there must be SOMEONE with the same monitor... or even if you don't have the same monitor.. maybe you can help.

I am not the most tech savvy... just able to follow directions well. So please linustechtips community HELP!!!!

Any suggestions/input/comments will be greatly appreciated

Edit////

here is a video demonstrating the problem

Hi,

I don't have the monitor nor a PS4 but I think I may have a solution. When the PS4 is connected to the monitor and they are both turned on, look for a button on the monitor called "Source" (or something along those lines) and try to switch through the different sources (i.e. HDMI1, HDMI2 etc.). I had a similar problem before and I realized that I connected the device to HDMI1 but the monitor was showing HDMI2 (which was not connected to anything at the time). So, yeah, I just switched sources to HDMI1 and voila. Problem solved. Anyways, Hope I helped.

Best of luck,

JayZero.

Thanks for the reply, but no I've tried that.

Another thing I want to try is changing the resolution, however the funny thing is... I cannot access the OSD menu when the monitor receives a signal from the PS4... while I'm on the computer the OSD menu shows up and everything is gravy... but with the ps4 (which is on HDMI 1) no OSD menu... so can't even switch back to the macbook (HDMI2) or the pc (DisplayPort)....

it is very annoying because I see videos on youtube of ppl playing PS4 and Xbox on the same monitor.....

This is very strange. I guess this is really my last piece of advice: Disconnect EVERYTHING except for the monitor and the PS4. Try connecting the PS4 to HDMI1 and turn it on. If that doesn't work, try connecting it to HDMI2. If that still doesn't work, try looking for a spare HDMI cable and repeat.

Note to keep in mind: Even though the display for the PS4 may not be showing, it could still be turned on (like you mentioned). Try turning the volume up and play around with the Dpad and the analog sticks. See if you can hear anything (I also know that you could connect headsets to the PS4 controller. Maybe that could be valuable information). This tip helped me set up my PS3 a few years back.

Last resort: Adapters. Your monitor also supports DVI and VGA. If you can find and HDMI to DVI/VGA, maybe that could work? DVI and VGA are only used for video. For sound, I guess you could just use the speakers that you mentioned in the video.

Best of luck,

JayZero

Ok I was able to solve this problem. I used my monitor from work and it worked on that one. Went into settings and turned of HDCP.

Now another question...

I went to TFT.com and looked at the specs for the BenQ XL2720Z. It says it is HDCP content enabled... so I am confused.. am I missing something?

I apologize. I'm not too sure where to go from this point on. The good thing is that you got the connection to work. As for the HDCP, I'm confused as well. If it worked with HDCP off, I assume it also had to be off for the other monitor.

  • 4 weeks later...

Going through the exact same problem right now. Have a ps3 and ps4 connected to the BenQ via HDMI and a PC via d-sub. PS3 and PC are working perfectly fine, but the PS4 is just black flickering screen. And the weird thing is that I had it working before - no issues whatsoever. Stopped playing for couple months and now have this damn problem.

EDIT: The HDCP checkmark in the PS4 system settings seems to be the culprit. I unchecked it on my TV and now ps4 works with the monitor. I'm still not quite sure what HDCP is, but I guess I don't need it after all. And I have no idea why everything was working for me before and then suddenly stopped. Anyways, thank you for the tip.

I would try different HDMI cables. Sometimes a faulty cable can seem like it's fine but when HDCP comes into play, it can cause issues. One way to test that I know of is if you have an nVidia video card in your gaming PC, you can go into the nVidia Control Panel and check HDCP status. It should look like this:

When the PS4 is connected and OSD is not working, try holding any of the menu buttons for 10 seconds to see if it brings it up (this is supposed to unlock the OSD, not sure if it will help but worth a try). As for the PS4 itself, use a TV temporarily and make sure it is set to 1080p/60hz. I would recommend turning HDCP back on unless you plan on recording gameplay with an external captures system. Without it on you won't be able to watch video content (Netflix, Hulu, etc...). Also, when hooking everything back up, turn the monitor on then turn the PS4 on.

In my case OSD was working while the flickering was happening, but it was showing up and disappearing (between the flashes) too fast to operate it. And turning HDCP back on doesn't seem to be an option. I tried, the screen went black immediately so I had to hook it up to tv again and undo the checkmark. The YouTube and Netflix apps don't work as a result - but watching it through the browser does the trick (even though it's a little less convenient). Not sure what to do about the HDCP issue at this point, but at least I can play games.
