There is really not a whole lot more to say about it.

Does it come with a backplate?

This version does not.

There is a version that comes with a backplate, but it seems not to be available on Amazon.

If you really need a backplate, then get this one: http://www.amazon.com/Radeon-Overclocked-512-bit-DisplayPort-Graphics/dp/B011D7AAEE/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1448493060&sr=1-2&keywords=AMD+R9+390X

There are two version. One comes with a backplate, the other one does not. The one on Amazon doesn't have it.

I heard that Asus is a brand to stay away from for AMD cards because of their performance compared to other brands

You heard correctly. Any reason it has to be Amazon? The OC edition I linked to is arguably the best 390 you can buy.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

That is not true.

A lot of people were complaining that the card runs hotter than most other cards. But that is simply because the ASUS fan curve isn't very agressive and is more tuned to be quiet.

But ASUS' AMD GPUs are the only ones with a completly automated manufacturing process. These cards are designed to run hot.

you are correct. As an owner of an Asus R9 280 I urge you to stay away from Asus as a whole - both because of poor products and horrible customer support
