Low frame rates in Witcher 3?

jonnyfrost1

I have been playing Witcher 3 for a while now and I have been noticing that my frames are not what I expected them to be.

Here is a list of my hardware:

PSU Seasonic X850 MOBO Asus Z87-Pro CPU Intel Core i7-4770K CPU COOLER NH-U14S Memory Crucial Ballistix 2x8GB DDR3-1866 GPU EVGA GeForce GTX 780 SC 3GB OS Microsoft Windows 8.1

When I run the game on 1920x1080 on Ultra, I am getting about 30fps average. This doesn't seem right to me so I was wondering if anybody could help me. Or maybe am I just expecting too much of my hardware. Also I am getting serious screen tearing throughout the game and in the map view as well.

What are your AA/MSAA/Hairworks settings? I find that turning all Hairworks features off gives a good increase in FPS.

Thanks for replying.

Every setting is as high as possible, but that is not my point. What i want to know is if these frame rates sound right for my hardware?

Also I forgot to mention My monitor does not have g-sync, but I have all the latest nvidia drivers. I don't know if any of this makes a difference.

Thanks

If you have hair works enabled then it makes sense because only 980ti and TitanX are pretty much capable of sustaining 60FPS on 1089p in Witcher 3 if you max everything out and hair works is the most FPS punishing thing of all settings.

Sounds about right. I get about 32fps average with hairworks at 1440p with an overclocked R9 290. The 780 series apparently doesn't do too well in Witcher 3.

I'm surprised you even get 30 fps with Hairworks on and everything maxed out. Witcher 3 doesn't like Kepler at all. And Hairworks is about the biggest fail I have seen in a game that's not completely broken (so disqualifying Arkham Knight).

As the other guys above said, Hairworks is REALLY heavy on this game. Try enabling it only for Geralt, and setting in no higher than 4x. If that is playable, try turning it back on for everything, but really the 8x setting is best to be reserved for the absolutely top end cards of this gen. With those settings, I think the performance you are getting is just about right.

For 700 series cards it's just pointless to run hairworks on, because it kills the performance REALLY HARD, my 770 gets 20 fps lower if i enable it (at x4)

I presume OCed 780 could handle this game on ultra with 40+ fps @1080p, but with hairworks completely off.
