GTX 970 and 980 Bottlenecks?

Hello fine folk of the LTT forum!

 

I am looking to upgrade my graphics card. I've decided on team green, either a 980 or 970. However I had some concerns about bottlenecks considering my CPU's are quite outdated. I'm running dual socket Xeon 5450's @ 3 ghz. This Website: https://cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html says they're slightly better than an i5 4690k, how true is that?

If it is true, will my CPUs bottleneck either cards?

If you're worried about CPU bottleneck, you a probably better off with nvidia, since their drivers have less overhead in dx11.10/9.  Also, 980 makes no sense. Only if you find it for less than $430, otherwise go for 970.

Overall though amd and 390/390x are better for the money.

What are the equivalents for team red?

970 - 390, same price,faster, double VRAM

980 - 390x, slightly slower, but also cheaper + double VRAM (which will come in handy in the future)

 

and then there is R9 Fury, bit more expensive than the 980 but also faster

Wait how did you arrive at the conclusion that your E5450s are better than the 4690k? They're not anywhere near each other. In fact the E5450 is near the very bottom of the Passmark chart with the Q9550 and Phenom II B99. Unless you were looking at something different?

Now that being said having dual 5450s should mean your system can handle a 970 with a minimal amount of bottlenecking. The only time you might hit a bit of a wall is in a game that doesn't utilize your second CPU or relies on a single core.

I ran my 970 with my QX9650 and I think my average GPU usage at 1080p was about 70%. Not bad really.

Why not opt for a 390/390X or the regular Fury, OP? Just curious, did you choose team green cause of performance or some exclusive features?

I've been watching the development of g-Sync vs Free Sync, lately Free-Sync seams to be pretty stagnant. At some point I hope to upgrade to a 1440p monitor, mainly for CSGO. But if it had G-Sync i could play other games as well which would be nice

Fair enough, I was just confused as the AMD counterparts offer more performance.

What do you base on "slightly better"? Adding 4305+4305> 7722? That is far from how it works my friend.

The website actually does dual socket benchmarks since adding another CPU doesn't always double performance.
