You will need DP apapters for this, the other way is to grab 3x of them extemely cheap cards, but then you'll need a expensive board that has 3x pcie x16 slots.

Cheap cards won't be able to run any games, just basic desktop. Nvidia cards and run up to 4 (I think) in surround. Onboard from motherboards on some can drive up to 3.

I found a 775 board for 80$ that does 3 way sli.    evga 780i nforce

A board with 3 x16 slots are needed if you're going to get a extremely cheap card like a GT730 where the maximum number of ouputs is 2, so you'll need 3 of them to run 5 monitors. GTX 950 can run up to 4 monitors on a single card. And it could be possible to run with onboard as well.

Sounds reasonable to me to power 5 monitors. Lol

my air cadet squadron is more than capable of paying like 2000$ for the pc. but they are afraid of spending money. even if they finish each year with like 10-15k in bank. of extra...

nope idk where you guys got that you could run gpu and on board. but that is a 100% impossible .

the GPU disables the igpu as soon as its plugged in. whatever you try to do.

Actually newer boards can since Z77. For Asus boards there is a setting call PCIe iGPU multi monitor, turn this on and you can run both igpu and gpu at the same time. Just trying to find a way to help off load the work to from the gpu to the igpu, so your gpu can focus on actual part of the game.

That isn't true, you can enable the iGPU manually in BIOS on all Intel boards with Lucid Virtu technology (so LGA 1155 and newer). That's how you run encoding through QuickSync on the iGPU while using a dedicated graphics card.

Well in that case, then it's either

1x AMD Eyefinity 6 card or

2x Nvidia GTX card that supports Nvidia surround or 2x AMD gpu that supports Eyefinity

According to Nvidia's site, GTX 660Ti can drive up to 4 monitor so with 2 of them you can do 8.

That doesn't even have on-board graphics, so would be a moot point anyway :)
