How do I choose which model of PSU I should use?

cmfsamn

Initially, I wanted to use a CX600M for my build. I though that Corsair was a reliable brand and even see Linus himself use it in builds. But then many people commented on my build saying that the CX series is unreliable and "is known to fry up some rigs". So what is a good PSU model or brand? And how should I choose mine? I try going for other brands but I'm simply not familiar with them.

If it helps, I went to the CoolerMaster Outervision power supply calculator thingy and it gave me 513W. I'm using an R9 390 and i5-4690K, and this rig is mainly for gaming.

Also, what are the most reliable PSU models (not wattage; CX,CS,RM series from Corsair etc.)? If I ever need to build another pc which brand/model should I aim for?

seasonic is a all around good brand. most of evga's are good. the evga  gs line i believe fits your bill. it is the caps in the secondary that people are concerned about, they are rated at 30c, not very high. lots of people are fine with the cx line, they wouldn't sell them if they were going to lose money on them.  you can look up who really makes the psu and this will give you a better idea of its quality. i use http://www.jonnyguru.com/ to look at scope testing.

It's not that CX PSUs are inherently bad - It's just that they were really designed for an office work computer type application and not a consistently high power draw application like you will find in gaming computers. If you know you're going to be doing any kind of gaming or heavy work loads that will be sucking on lots of power for long periods of time, them I would advise going with something like a Seasonic, XFX, or EVGA.
