Using NAS drives in a music/video production PC?

Go to solution Solved by ShadowCaptain,

Alright, so I'm looking into a new PC. As I am going to need a lot of space for sample libraries, I was wondering the benefits of using WD red drives, since I found a 4TB drive for about 150$: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Desktop-Hard-Disk-Drive/dp/B00EHBERSE/ref=sr_1_2?m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1448452675&sr=1-2

Nope dont do it, get a Blue or something

here is a 4tb SSHD for like $20 more

Or 4tb storage drive for $112

You won't really benefit, but it'll work just fine.

A Blue would be cheaper...

Intel Core i7-6700K | Corsair H105 | Asus Z170I PRO GAMING | G.Skill TridentZ Series 16GB | 950 PRO 512GB M.2

Asus GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB STRIX OC | BitFenix Prodigy (Black/Red) | XFX PRO Black Edition 850W

That's what I'm thinking of. Thanks

Yeah, would only get Reds if you plan on using RAID in the future. They are quite fast when you run them in RAID.

Otherwise, yeah, the blue is good for you.

Hmm I was considering doing a RAID setup. I wanted to do a smart response SSD (through M.2 on the mobo) and then everything on a RAID'd storage device. I must say, RAID 10 (or 0) of 4TB drives sounds pretty nice, especially with a smart response drive.

Yeah, I had RAID10 of the Reds (Four 4TB). It wasn't cheap. I got 380MB/s read and write on sequential. It also adds quite a bit of weight to the PC.

Smart Response would definitely give it even more kick though. I'm too broke to buy more SSDs and I've moved all of the Reds to my NAS instead of my PC. Six 4TB Reds in RAID10 will fetch you around 550MB/s Sequential read or write. Do keep in mind that as the array gets filled, it will run slower (Because you're getting closer to the center of the drives).

Ahh, didn't think about that, but it'll take me awhile to use 8TB lol
