As I understand it older versions of windows would say they were "committing" more RAM than they actually used, and the RAM was factually usable. Not sure how it is with ten though.

Do not  as I  do, and  not  as I say. Instead do as you may..

Less than a GB to spare is cutting it a bit close, but that laptop is certainly not designed for anything too demanding anyway

My desktop has 3.7 of 13.8 GB committed (hm I only have 12 GB of ram but we'll ignore that)

In fact, everything in my task manager for ram is higher except for the hardware reserved value; mine is only 53.2 MB

Does restarting the computer help? I assume you've done so after you noticed the issue

Are you using 32 or 64-bit Windows 10?

Your integrated graphics needs RAM and this is likely why you have 1.6GB hardware reserved RAM. Maybe you can change the exact amount in your Bios.

Caching RAM is a Windows feature which keeps your system fast. Files that were used before are kept in RAM so the next time you need them they load faster. Cached RAM is basically free as Windows will automatically free it up when another program needs it.
