980 sli vs 980 ti?

I currently have an MSI GTX 980 and am thinking of upgrading my monitor soon.  I will most likely go for a 1440p 144hz ROG swift but I may also go for a 3440x1440 ultrawide.

My question is what would give me the best performance for the money?  It would be about $500 for a second 980 or if I sell my current 980 about $250 for a 980 ti.

I'm most likely going to go with the 1440p 144hz since I have limited desk space at college, but if I can get a solid price on CyberMonday for an ultrawide then I will buy the ultrawide.

I'd say upgrade to the 980ti after selling the 980, then see how it performes, then try it. :3 But you wont be doing 1440 144Hz on highest settings either way..

if you can sell the 980 at a decent price, 980ti all the way

FPS wise, would it be a smoother experience going with an ultrawide?  I mean of course the ROG swift has G-sync so I wont notice it but I'd rather not spend premium on 144hz if I can't even reach it.

4GB is plenty for 1440p in my experience, and 980 SLI walks all over a 980 ti in terms of performance.

Going ultrawide will never give you smoother performance. You are adding pixels and thus reducing framerates. Pushing out 144HZ at 1440p or 1440p ultrawide straight up isn't going to happen regardless of your rig with modern AAA titles. At the end of the day, 980 SLI will perform significantly better than a single 980ti, but you will (maybe) be limited by the 4GB VRAM.

I think I will be selling my gtx 980 for the ti.  I'd rather have more Vram than not enough and have to upgrade soon after spending $500.

I will hopefully be able to snag $375 - $400 for my custom painted MSI 980.

It might be hard to sell used gpu on holiday discount sales, meanwhile 980ti will probably drop some price.

Ti is the best option as not all games support SLI (or very well). I saw a 30-40% increase upgrading from 980 to the Ti variant. You'll like the performance increase.

My eventual setup in the long run will be an ultrawide on the desk and a wallmounted 4K TV above it.  Just gotta wait for technology to evolve

I'm looking at 4K myself. Just gotta see how well Pascal can handle it. If not, I'll just go with 1440p until 4K is viable. :)

So I did some scouting around and checked my current settings.  I currently rarely even use AA except for on older games like mirrors edge and witcher.

If these are rather true benchmarks, then I don't see why an sli 980 config would be an issue at all.

I use a 980ti with the rog swift. Performance is good for me. Sure I don't reach 144 fps on modern AAA titles but I can get locked 60 for maxed out whitcher III, around 80 for fallout 4 and between 90 to 100 on battlefront.

Laptop: Lenovo Y510p, i7-4700HQ, 12 GB (8+4) 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, GT755 2GB SLI graphis card, 1366x768 display.

I will buy your 980!!!

But I would never suggest an SLI rig, but a single card 1440p, especially at 144hz, rig is hard to nail. You're wanting to run top of the line games at top of the line specs, you're going to need the hardware. I would suggest you take advantage of 2 980tis
