Is it worth it?

Trey222

I am building myself a PC and i need advice to see if this would be a good build. I would be using 2 Intel Xeon X5460s -52.95 USD.

Ebay Page http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lot-of-2-Intel-Quad-Core-Xeon-X5460-SLANP-12M-Cache-3-16GHz-1333MHz-LGA-771-/191741778765?hash=item2ca4b35b4d:g:iwUAAOSw5ZBWON0a

Intel Page http://ark.intel.com/products/33087/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5460-12M-Cache-3_16-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

Then I will be getting the SuperMicro X7DCL-3 Motherboard- 44.99 USD.

Ebay Page http://www.ebay.com/itm/SuperMicro-X7DCL-3-Motherboard-Dual-LGA771-Socket-Intel-Xeon-64Bit-w-I-O-Shield-/201385625970?hash=item2ee384c972:g:xMgAAOSw37tWD48Q

Official Page http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon1333/5100/X7DCL-3.cfm

Finally I will be getting 16GB of Hynix 677MHz ECC DDR2 - 16.99 USD.

Ebay Page http://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-4X4GB-Hynix-DDR2-667MHz-PC2-5300-ECC-2Rx4-HYMP151P72CP4-Y5-HP-405477-061-/301805265101?hash=item4644fee0cd:g:v~wAAOSw5ZBWGBky

Could not find Official Page. Sorry :(

This brings the total to 114.94 USD. My question is if this would be good or is I should just buy a regular system.  I plan to pair this setup with a GTX 980 and a 1080p Monitor too. Thanks for your help.

LOL. Now that is a blast from the past.

If this if for gaming only, it will likely work fairly well. My guess is that those CPU's would bottleneck a 980 a little bit as they are relatively slow, and so old that they probably would be on par with a 2.5GHz or less modern day CPU. That being said, I can see you've been inspired by junkyard wars, and I seriously doubt that you could build something better for cheaper, as a modern day intel quad core will set you back almost double your current total for the CPU alone.

Also, I would assume that drivers MAY be an issue for anything above 7...

When in doubt, re-format.

I did not think about drivers thanks for that. Also I think it would bottleneck the 980 a bit, but with newer games using DX12 there should be better support for multiple cores. I also think it is really cool to build a PC with two CPUs and be able to say I build an 8 core pc with 16GB of RAM for under $150. I also think it would be cool to say my PC has 2 1245 USD proccesors in it even if they are from 2007.

Don't count on DX12 to give you ANY benefits, especially since it will be win10 exclusive. If you're gonna build this computer is it for ^ that reason above. Because that is as good a reason as any to do something totally out there.

Also, remember the power supply. Chances are that you will need a pretty beefy one (even with just a single 980) like in the order of 750+ watts to be on the safe side.

But yea, the "Because I Can" reason is about all the justification you need to sell someone like me on a build like this. It is also dirt cheap.

When in doubt, re-format.

Ashes of the singularity (the only DX12 game we have benchmarks for) didn't show that trend.

YeahI am not really counting in DX12 but saying I am helps me justify this build. Also I think Win10 should work on it because I got it working on my old Dell Inspiron E1505 from 05. Also you think this PSU would work? http://www.ncixus.com/products/?usaffiliateid=1000031504&sku=97531&vpn=110-B2-0750-VR&manufacture=eVGA. And yeah this build is mostly because I can and also so I can buy a nicer GPU so if this system is not Good i can just keep the GPU and upgrade the other things.

Wow, sorry for the delay, I think that PSU would totally work for the system. If you do end up doing this, make sure to post it and show some benchmarks, I'm highly curious as to how this would work.

When in doubt, re-format.
