When making posts like these, try to enlighten him as to WHY he should do that. Maybe link some benchmarks, some price:performance comparisons, ask him if he already owns a 970 and if he is buying another because of that (His sig lists him having a GTX 970). Just telling someone to choose another GPU without telling them why, is counter productive.

Yes, it will work just fine. http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/462341-skylake-haswell-e-pcie-lane-misconception/

It isn't about saving AMD, it's about buying the better product.

Then sell the 970 and upgrade to a 980Ti if you're going to bother doing any sort of upgrading.

weeeell, the thing is that i am a moron.. was trying to figure which fan(s) was making the most noise in my system, so i stopped the fans while they were running and when i came to a fan one my graphics card on fanblade broke off when i stopped it so i doubt i will get a good price for it. #donttroubleshootafter4beers

Okay, what screen do you have? I hope you're going for a very high framerate instead of high resolution or you might start running into issues with the 3.5GB of VRAM. The GTX 970 is not an ideal card for crossfiring as if you need the GPU horsepowere that crossfire brings, you're liable to run into your 3.5 GB VRAM limit and start microstuttering as you try to address that last 0.5 GB that's super slow.

I am thinking of upgrading to a 3440x1440p monitor. but 3.5GB VRAM should be enough, shouldn't it?

I would start trying to sell it and get a GTX 980ti. Games like Shadow of Mordor and GTAV are already going over 3.5GB of VRAM at 1080p max settings, so if you're going for 1440p it's only going to get worse. The way to alleviate that would be to turn things like AA down or off, but then you wouldn't need the horsepower that comes from SLI. It's the GTX 970 conundrum.
