Li-Fi! The Way of The Future?

So, Li-Fi has just been tested in the real world. I hadn't heard of this concept until today and it absolutely blows my mind that this is possible. The future is amazing.

Cool idea.  Hopefully it can be done with non-visible light

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

Didn't say it would be done in flashes unseeable to the human eye?

hm, maybe.  But I bet if they used dedicated "bright" invisible bulbs instead of piggybacking this weak signal onto existing lighting they could get more bandwidth and probably a stronger more reliable signal.

That's a great idea!

Infrared might work. We could call it something like......IrDA?

Man, I gotta go copyright that name and patent the idea of data transfer over infrared before somebody beats me to it.

Infrared data transfer already exists.

Infrared Data Transmission. IrDA (Infrared Data Association) is an industry standard for wireless communication with infrared light. Many laptops sold today are equipped with an IrDA-compatible transceiver that enables communication with other devices, such as printers, modems, LANs, or other laptops

A few issues I have with this idea. For a start it seems like a good way to receive data but what about UL? Does my device now have a torch on it pointing at the roof at all times or do we still have to use WiFi for UL? What about times when I don't need the lights on, do I just turn them on anyway so this can work? Do I have to have all of my gadgets under lights now rather than in my pocket, in cases or inside a cabinet? I can't see this working as a replacement to WiFi, at most it can be an addition to WiFi.

Then there's the question of installing this gear. So first you run a data cable to the lights you want to be capable of this, one in every room. You have to do it like that because otherwise it would defeat the point of it. This thing is all about higher speeds and data security right? You have to run cables. So given that my question would be why not just run a cable all the way? It's cheaper, faster, more secure and bi-directional.

I can think of one (and only one) scenario where this tech would be useful. In a crowded city where the radio waves are being filled to the brim I could see this being a way to reduce some of that. Not in offices or houses but in public spaces. That's the only place I can see this being a reasonable option.

Imagine a backlit laptop or something that shines light on itself. Infinite free Li-Fi, just need the receiver.
