foam case ?

givingtnt

so I have a project of making a computer inside a F-86F with the golden hawk colors.

I cannot afford a 1:30 model in plastic or metal. would be custom made and would cost like 3k$ to make.

so I decided to make my own. would foam be ok for heat and pc parts ? is there any danger using it ?

What kind of foam are you thinking? Obviously like styrofoam is going to melt, but you could use high density urethane, harder Polyurethane or Puren I suppose

high density home isolation hard foam.

the blue thick sheets ?  I expect the pc to get quite hot. because the ventilation is through the center of the aircraft (where the engin would be)

Blue thick sheets is a tad vague :P But the home insulation foam is more what I had in mind with the polyurethane

Although honestly you could just mount the computer to some plexiglass for heat resistance and better airflow and then make the model out of paper mache or another easier to mold material around the plexi

Polyurethane or other hard plastics would be pretty difficult to make into like a tubular shape for the hull of the aircraft imo :P

*Also, what do I waste my 1000th post on!?*

An F-86... Like the Sabre plane?

That would be interesting. I can't help you with your question at all but it would be neat.

yes exacly

would looks like this but with a pc inside :

This video will give you a good idea. Shapable foam that you can cover in an epoxy to harden.

ooh nice. that will help with thermals of the case itself.

cool !

There are a few 1:32 kits floating around the web if you know where to look.

http://www.amazon.com/Italeri-Models-F-86F-Sabre-Skyblazers/dp/B008IJFAFU

Ik this doesn't answer your question regarding foam, but it's worth a look.

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

By blue thick sheets, I assume he means expanded/extruded polystyrene. It also commonly comes in pink sheets at the hardware stores for insulating houses.

The melting point is 240 degrees C, so theoretically you would be alright... I would buy a small piece of it, and set your motherboard directly on it while running some games or something, like a makeshift test bench just to see what would happen before going through all the work and finding out it will not work.

I would still play it safe and build compartments out of steel or aluminum sheet for the components, and inset them into the foam model. Long term direct contact with 80 degree C parts may have an effect on the foam even if it is still well below the melting point. Its really hard to know for sure without just giving it a try and seeing what will happen.

what about mounting the components to a board? foam is kinda nuts. and then i remember the static shocks i used to get off them.
