The Internet is the greatest source of information in the world. Advertising has helped it grow to what it is today but how will we fund the internet of tomorrow? Meet Google Contributor, a new way to support the sites you love: http://g.co/contributor

 

This is pretty cool, it seems like the amount the ads were worth would be deducted from the balance you put every month, Its a good first step because there are a lot of people who like to support people just not through ads

Maybe if ads didn't eat through my data cap, slow everything down with flash, play audio very loudly, hijack my browser to take me to another page, cover an entire page until I click through the ad, randomly restart their videos after being paused, etc., adblockers wouldn't be needed. Things have gotten far too out of hand.

 

To be fair, many sites I go to I disable it completely because they aren't bad and I want to support the site (pretty much any site I visit more than once). But simply browsing through the web? I'm not going to deal with that headache and all the problems ads cause. I'm fine with ads, no problem there, but until advertisers learn to stop being so annoying and ridiculous with them, adblock is going to stay installed and on.

 

 

 

While I'm fine with this idea, it seems like it would get expensive very quick if you wanted to get rid of ads on more than just a site or two. Nice way to support sites you like though.

You know what's easier than buying and building a brand new PC? Petty larceny!
If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Maybe if ads didn't eat through my data cap, slow everything down with flash, play audio very loudly, hijack my browser to take me to another page, cover an entire page until I click through the ad, randomly restart their videos after being paused, etc., adblockers wouldn't be needed. Things have gotten far too out of hand.

 

To be fair, many sites I go to I disable it completely because they aren't bad and I want to support the site (pretty much any site I visit more than once). But simply browsing through the web? I'm not going to deal with that headache and all the problems ads cause. I'm fine with ads, no problem there, but until advertisers learn to stop being so annoying and ridiculous with them, adblock is going to stay installed and on.

 

 

 

While I'm fine with this idea, it seems like it would get expensive very quick if you wanted to get rid of ads on more than just a site or two. Nice way to support sites you like though.

If you're worried about getting caught, here's a trick: Only steal one part at a time. Plenty of people will call the cops because somebody stole their computer -- nobody calls the cops because they're "pretty sure the dirty-bathrobe guy from next door jacked my heat sink."

Internet was born free and should stay this way. I don't need to see any ads or pay for not seeing them. If i would contribute to every single website that I'm using on a daily basis just to not see ads I couldn't afford to live. I use AdBlock and ZenMate and I'm happy with it.

 

I think the general idea is that adverts raise a tiny amount of money. Fractions of a cent per page view. You total those up over a month and you're talking a few dollars maximum.

The internet can use many people doing business on it just frankly going away. Yes it's sad some folk made a career of it but shit happens: Look at the car industry in the US.

As long as it works properly I think that this is a good way to go.

This is the one of the oldest fallacies about online advertising that has been floating around for years.

 

One, the web isn't "free" - if it were, there would not be advertisements up in my face on every site I visit.

 

Two, it is with certainty that corporate interests are driving the ad-blocking push-back; they have by far the most (money) to lose from ad-blocking. Shitty, useless websites that are limping along on advertising are no great loss, and not really what's at stake here.

 

Finally, no one is entitled to success. All these "content creators" that are surviving due to ad revenue are forced to do so because they don't actually have a marketable product or are too lazy to come up with a viable business model. They end up selling their users to ad companies, instead of selling their content to users. Frankly, I think the internet is becoming over-saturated with bloggers and YouTubers and what have you, that have nothing better to do than get paid by ad companies for page views.

 

In short, a lot is going to need to change to make the web truly free.

Its true, sadly, that the low barrier to entry is almost going to cause a collapse of the system itself. I used to go on YouTube and watch several hours of YouTube bloggers/reviewers/commentators a day. Now i just don't even want to watch the select few i still follow because its not worth wading through all the crap. Even established YouTubers (LMG has been better, but not perfect) have series that seem to exist for no reason other than they found that someone would pay them for it, rather than an audience demand.

 

As much as i wish that creators could make money off just their own interesting work, through donations and the like, i know that is just pure folly to believe in. Ad supported web, ad sponsored content, and a lot of the same payment plans will collapse eventually i feel. Either due to the proliferation of ad blockers, studies done that show in article ads are ignored, or just generally companies not seeing the return on investment.

 

Personally i would support something like Vessel, the only issue is that there is only 2 channels i watch on it, and the 4 main ones i watch are all on YouTube. Ill be honest, I'm far too lazy to go to multiple sites for something when there is a simple solution all in one spot. YouTube Red almost fixes that, except that most creators now have their own ad segments in videos that aren't filtered out too, which is understandable but seems kinda backwards to me.

 

For now ill just stick with not using adblock (gave it up a while back) but instead running a lot of no-script and tracker destroyer add-ins. You can have my ad revenue, but my personal information will stay my own.

This is actually pretty awesome. Too bad sites that use ads not by Google adsense will still provide potentially invasive and sometimes malicious advertisements.

No, you keep your computer safer, most of the virus infections nowadays are coming from ads, you are getting a better browsing experience since lots of people just put so many ads in their website that's like shooting your internet connection in a knee and making it run a marathon, you are not getting stupid popus, you are not getting nsfw content, but yeah ads are great.

How do you expect it to stay free I'd the people making the content or hosting the websit don't get paid? The Internet is free because if ads. I don't like them but I understand why we need them.
