OBS streaming for beginners

don_svetlio

My friend is trying to figure out how to stream with OBS but she's having some issues like hearing her own voice over the speakers and asked me for a detailed beginner guide on how to set it up and start streaming. I'd much appreciate it if someone could help me out since I'm not really knowledgeable.

Specs
i5 4200H Dual Core with HT @ 2.8GHz
8GB DDR3L
1TB HDD
GTX 850M GDDR5 version (essentially a 860M)
Windows 8.1

Thanks in advance.

What is she trying to stream? I'm not sure if you can get a decent stream from that config.

What are her internet speeds by the way?

She's trying to Stream Dragon Age Inquisition at 720p 30fps - she's using Skype currently (long story)  and her system is capable enough from what I could dig up. Internet speed is about 30Mb/s down and 20Mb/s up

Also - I just remembered @D2ultima was very knowledgeable about streaming.

If my old dinosaur can stream Grid 2 at 480p30 then that thing can probably do 720p60 with GPU encoding.

Not sure GM107 supports it

You need to find a balance of internet speed and CPU usage, once you find the right setting it'll be golden. OBS has a helpful chat thingy on their site, that's how my GF got help to set hers up on her mac.

You will probably be better off looking at some of the setup guides for it on youtube.

The issue with those is you can't ask questions or request clarification if you don't understand certain things :)

If the 850M GDDR5 = Maxwell, it should.

it's a 750 Ti rebrand

I see - will let her know - should it be through GFE or ?

Yeah, I would definitely suggest using old OBS (not OBS multiplatform) and using NVENC. The i5-4200H is a dual core with hyperthreading which already makes it awful for streaming, but it has a 35W TDP limit like all the soldered CPUs since haswell's inception, and to top it off, Dragon Age is heavy on the CPU like all frostbite engine games.

If she is capable of getting over 30fps in the game and does not have it locked to 30fps, I would suggest streaming at 35fps or 42fps, and using ~2500 bitrate for video using the hardware encoder. It won't look the best, but it will definitely get the job done.

Also, the GTX 850M GDDR5 version has a pretty reduced clockspeed over the 860M, so unless it's overclocked with a custom vBIOS you should keep it in mind that it's a decent bit weaker.

As for whether she can hear her voice or not, not only are there sliders in OBS, but there's abilities to multiply the sound levels too.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

I see - will forward her to this post and hope she sets it up the correct way - she's getting decent performance (It's a 768p laptop so yeah) and I guess 35fps is probably optimal.

Question - isn't the i5 4200H locked to 47W since it's listed as 47W the same as my i7 4720HQ?

As for the 850M - it's around 900MHz (200MHz lower than my 860M) so I get what you mean. I should add some more to my memory actually - that's the limiting factor on mobile usually - bandwidth (128-bit bus! yay!)

Oh really? It might be then. Many of those chips were 37W I could be wrong.

The bandwidth on your 860M isn't so limiting for you because your core doesn't handle enough data. It's why the 960 and 965M have the issues but not the 750Ti/860M/960M. Those cards have a sufficiently stronger core that memory bandwidth can become an issue.

But I mean, feel free to bump the memory clocks if you can.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

wasn't the 960m a rebranded 860m with a +100Mhz boost? According to the GPU Database at TechPowerUp at least. 965m was GM206 I believe whereas the 960/860/950/850 were GM107

I might - not sure if I want to tho :D - given my paranoia ^_^

Yes, hence 960M/860M/750Ti/etc. basically the same thing.

965M is a GTX 960 with a 5000MHz memory clock instead of a 7000MHz one, and a slower clockspeed. Both of them have a strong enough core to be hindered by their pathetic memory bandwidths.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.

(btw that is just a reskineed gigabytes audio manager , its the default audio manager you find on any windows computer , just reskinned)

I wouldn't exactly say better value per-se... but better balanced. I mean, 965M is generally something like 80% stronger out of the box and can be overclocked too... just that only at the limits of overclocking an 860M will you even begin to encounter memory bandwidth limitations, whereas at the 965M's start you could. It's not much more expensive either.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
