Fanless air cooling?.....

Xarvz

So in this video Linus puts no fans on the be quiet dark rock pro 3 for a more silent PC. I'm wondering what's the best cooler to do this with or if you should even do this at all. I would be using a 6700k not overclocked.

Just try it without the fans plugged in and play some games/run applications. If the temps get too high stop them and put on the fans, if it doens't get too high use it :)

You'd want a cooler with the biggest combined surface on the fins. To stimulate passive cooling. A dark rock pro 3 or noctua DH-15 are the biggest air coolers out there so either one of those

Forgot to add, probably a big Noctua/Be Quiet/Scythe cooler. Any that has a huge heatsink

no point buying 6700k if your not going to overclock

and you could do it with any high end dual tower heatsink. like nh d15

I wouldn't recommend passive cooling.  It requires good airflow to push air through the heatsink.  The only way to get airflow is fans so either way, there's gonna be fans somewhere and if you're looking for silence, then fans in the middle of the case are better than fans mounted on the walls.

What CPU would you suggest? I was thinking If I ever wanted to overclock I could put fans on it. Though regarding the looks of the noctua d15, I was thinking about getting the white define r5 with a window to maybe have a white/black theme but I'm not a 100% about having a window.

If you were planning on overclocking in the future you can just get the 6700k.

Depends on what you're going to use it for. If it's gaming, a 6600 would do, and if you're rendering and stuff the 6700.
