Real Holiday Buyer's Guide 2015

Morgan MLGman

No, do it. That's why I did it. If I had talked to someone like myself that tested them both in the same case I may have gone with the 290x. Don't know though, as the 390 does run cooler and use less power. But I'd be better off with the 290x as a single card, as anyone would I think.

That is exactly why I did swap to a 290X from my GTX 970 and that's also why I didn't go with a 390 despite it being within the budget, I didn't need 8GB of VRAM for my 1920x1200 so I opted for the more powerful GPU :) I assumed that based on Hardocp.com results 290 vs 390 clock for clock comparison where the results were very close, within a margin of error, so I assumed it's the same for the 290X and 390X case, also the chips on them are exactly the same with their specs, so I grabbed the 290X

It might be good when it comes to gaming, but people spending that much on a PC rarely just game, they use their PC's for some other heavy stuff and thus the i7 is mandatory, as well as a big SSD etc. That was the entire point of that build, and Linus also considered it like that

To prove to you that using rebates and different shops can get you even more for 500$ than what you put together:

I fit a R9 290 in there.

All builds have been updated for current pricing, the pattern still stands though, newegg used as the only retailer and mail-in rebates disabled ^^
