Organising the engineers

ChrisCross

So i just read this article:

https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/engineering/15062-Ship-Repair-And-Maintenance

after beeing completely blown away i looked at the numbers and it looks like engineering is the 3rd biggest group. so i thought maybe we need to get a little organized about this. so after what i read there are going to be three different groups of engineers:

-small ship engineers

-specialized subsystems engineers (bigger ships)

-executive engineers on bigger ships

the small ship engineers will be divided into two groups. Repair task manager (coordinating what and where to repair, choise of material, reconstruction missing parts) and repair arm operator (cutting broken parts out, manully 3d print to repair). so basically one job of knowledge and one of skill.

specialized subsystems engineers are there to repair large subssystems of bigger ships. they need to know a lot about the systems if they want to repair them quickly. afterall they are specialists.

executive engineers are there manage big ships (redirect power and cooling around broken subsystems so they can be repaired by the specialists, change to backup systems so the ship can keep running) they probably will need to communicate with the specialists. also there could be a head engineer who gives orders and consults the captain of the ship about maintenance and risk factors. also he needs to make sure there are enough materials (the salvage crew kicks in here too).

when i read threw this it sounds a bit like star trek which only excites me more for the finished game. but i would love to hear your ideas about this.

we could also educate people to do field repairs with the personal multitool.

Endeavor LTI, will at least get crucible ingame, upon release. Sort of considering trading out the endeavor for crucible, but on the fence for that.

Am I reading correctly in the article that the repair task manager, when formulating a repair in the labs, may be presented with a different materials configuration for assembly that is unique to the specific repair sought?  That being, that repair patches cannot be mass produced ahead of time; or at least repair patches of peak quality?  If so, it's an interesting concept to require live coordination amongst multiple players at once and not for a solo player looking to work alone in drydock.

yeah there are going to be different materials which have different qualities. another solution is to repair via drones but there are disatvantages to that. also you can repair alone but its going to need a lot more time because there is nobody to manage the materials on the fly.
