Any recommended free chat/IM web api(s)?

I'm looking for a good chatroom application that I can embed into a website.  Preferably one that supports embedded images/links and is free.

Does such a thing exist?

Check out Chatango, I don't know how easilly it is to embed but it can be done.

I suggest using a javascript IRC client, you can embed it on your website, create chat bots for IRC in python/perl/java/wtv, it's federated and pretty easy all-in-all.
