Draytek Vigor 2830n 10% drop in internet speed problem

trylo

Hi guys!

So my parents got a 100 Mbit down 20 Mbit up internet connection and the router they got from the internet company is incredibly shitty (can't handle 6 WiFi devices), so I turned off everything on that little Huawei router and put one ethernet cable to my old by trusted Draytek Vigor 2830n that proved itself many times.

Here is interesting thing: when I plug a Gigabit ethernet cable straight to Huawei router I am getting good speed (please se Huawei picture below) of 98.25 Mbit, but if I connect the same ethernet cable to Draytek I get about 10% drop: 89.51 Mbit (picture also attached).

It's not like those ~9Mbit is doing a huge difference to me, but I like things to run at full potential :)

Previously this this Draytek router was used with a slower internet connection (something like 10 Mbit down 1 Mbit up) so I never noticed any problems.

Any ideas where the speed drop comes from?

Thanks in advance!

Trylo

There are different dsl chipsets and its not uncommon that if you don't have matching manufacturers on either end that you get quite a substantial drop in performance. Typically the ISP will have chosen a cheap but matching router/modem to ship out to its customers and then when you buy a replacement its usually best to stick with that manufacturer or you can find sync speed drops.

However showing us a speedtest.net result isn't great, that can be affected by the speed of the internet or other factors, the key thing to look at is the sync speed itself as reported by the modem.

Can't find any GPON terminald from Draytek or in general, can't find many...

I guess I will have to make peace with that drop :)

BTW Can you set up Draytek so the computers connected to Draytek can see the once that are connected straight to Huawei?

My 2860n does a similar thing to yours, it doesn't show any DSL stats from the PPPoE port at all. Rather than doing PPPoE you could set it up as a bridge instead and use 192.168.0.1 for the modem (since its a router) but disable its firewall, nat and DHCP and then make a static route from something like 192.168.1.2 -> 192.168.0.1 and then you should be able to access to the routers config page from your network. You will have to do some messing around to make everything work right as you want the router to act as much like a modem as possible buts its certainly doable. I am kind of considering doing it as I can't see one of my connections details either.

This Huawei HG8245H doesn't have static route option... :/

I disabled DHCP, but I can't find NAT or Firewall settings... oh well...
