New custom built crashing

NnmsHckrr

Hi Guys,

I need help with the following as I have no other idea what I can do with my PC to get it work as it supposed to. I did a lot of research and tried every single advice I found on the web but everything was unsuccessful.

I built a PC about 2-3 months ago that's keep crashing since under load, like games, but not when stress-testing either CPU, RAM, GPU, even all together.

When a crash happens I don't get a BSOD or any error message, just freezes the screen and I also got a buzz through my sound system.

When I was looking for the cause of the crashes, I figured out that the RAMs were failed my memtests so I sent them back for exchange, but my problem was still there after I got the new ones.

What I've done this far are memtests, stress-tests (cpu, ram, gpu, ssd), checked windows event log and memdump, reinstalled Windows 10 (formatted SSD, clean install), cleaned CMOS, PSU self-test shown everything is fine.

I also disassembled and reassembled the whole PC (except cpu and cpu block as I don't have thermal paste) to make sure there's no any contact problem.

Everything is running on default, RAMs@2133. My temp are all fine CPU 24-25C idle, 40-45 under 100% load, GPU 30 idle and about 60-65 under load.

Drivers are all up to date and I don't use beta drivers. My BIOS is the latest official one.

Specs:

Windows 10 Pro x64

MSI X99S Gaming 7

Intel Core i7-5960X

NZXT X61 Kraken

16GB (4x4GB) Corsair Dominator Platinum 2666 C16

Corsair AX1200i

Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 Gaming -> HDMI - DVI -> Some 19" 1440x900 display (Works fine for ~7 years and I didn't feel for an upgrade, I have 2 of them anyway. :D )

Samsung 850 Evo 500GB

Apps I ran all the time:

NZXT CAM

SpeedFan

NVIDIA Backend (GeForce Experience and Control Panel can be opened through the tray)

Logitech G27 Profiler

I guess it's everything but anything else you need to help me, please comment.

Don't blame me about my English, it's not my first language but I'll do my best.

Have you tried enabling the XMP profile for the RAM?

Yes, I tried both profile but the same story, unfortunately.

Do you have a overclock on your CPU?

No, at the moment. I tried 4.5GHz with 1.299V on the core was stable but turned everything back to original till I solve the crashing problem.

I will try this in a few minutes and get back later with the results. I also have my mac next to me, just in case.

I reinstalled the whole Windows but nothing changed. I don't have another pci-e GPU to check, I used windows laptop and macs before I decided to build this, unfortunately.

Perhaps try the ram in the other slots?

Reboot into safe mode and check if things crash. If not, then try in networking enabled safe mode (a slim chance on this one, but worth a shot). If there's still no crashing, then open all the programs you would normally open (while in networking safe mode).

I need to have a shower but it seems that 1 stick 4GB RAM in the first channel and first slot is stable so far, I just started GTA 5 and let it just going till I'm away, if it's still unstable, it will freeze as it used to be.

I'll try this as soon as I finished my lessons. (it's 0:50 in the UK and my first lesson starts at 9 in the university).

I'm not sure that 4GB is enough for GTAV. I recall using about 6 GB yesterday while playing it, with very few other apps open.

So perhaps it's not the best test, since if it does crash, you can't be sure whether it's the problem prescribed, or a lack of available ram. If the game starts stuttering all over the place, that'll also be a giveaway.

I'm back, and I can happily say that the game is still running.

I know it's memory hungry but I didn't play with it, just let it run. You know, when you don't touch the game it's just looking the actual character's point of view, or whatever.  :)

So, is it mean my problem is the ram slots or something with it?

When I used all of my 16GB, Windows recognizes every bit of them.

Okay, that's good.

Have you enabled the ram XMP profile, and checked that the ram's specs match with what's shown in the bios (ie, ram speed and ram timings. There will probably be lots of numbers relating to timings in the bios, just look for a sequence like 9-9-9-24 (or whatever the timings are for your RAM). Or at least, that's how did it.

So it's stable with just one stick of ram in place?. I know it's a pain, but could you please try the stick that is known to be good in each ram slot and test for stability. If it shows up clean each time, then that would suggest that all four mobo ram slots are okay (but i suspect that is not the case).

I've found the following timings on corsair's website, for what i think is the same RAM, but please check the documentation that came with your kit.

  • Tested Latency: 16-18-18-35

It don't mean anything yet, you'd have to test all the slot to make sure.

You'd have to run this test with each of your ram stick too.

Yes, I've enabled XMP Profile 1, so it's running at 2666 C16 (in bios).

I will test all of my slots after I finished my lessons.

I have 4 channel and 8 slots. Do you think I need to test each slot or the 4 channels only?

That's okay mate, i'll get an email notification whenever you reply, so i'm in no hurry.

8 slots! Sorry man. You're testing with one stick of ram, and we're looking for a faulty slot that's affecting the whole thing, so unfortunately each slot has to be tested.

If each slot passes, then i'm thinking that you'll need to test each stick of ram (in one slot!). If it passes that, at that point, idk. That's getting into the layout of the motherboard, and the connections between the ram, cpu and any other chipsets. And i don't engineer motherboards for a living...

That's fine, I'll test each of them, no problem.

BTW the motherboard is the only piece of the system that has no warranty on it as I bought it from ebay, from a guy who won it. He opened it and he realised it's an x99 and he had no money to build a PC around it. It's just a little bit suspicious. Also, it has been in MSI's lab, where they handpicked the best ones, test it and prove it with a hand written certificate. I don't have the certificate but there's the sticker on the back of the mobo. That should mean it's better than the others, I read that somewhere.

I'll get back with the results soon.

Thanks

Hi there,

I just finished testing my PC and I'd like to share with you, guys.

I tested one single RAM in every 8 slots with XMP Profile 1 enabled. My slot pattern is the following: 1A 1B 2A 2B [place of the CPU] 4A 4B 3A 3B

The number means the number of channel and 'A' means primary, 'B' is secondary slots

All of the primary slot passed my tests (10 mins GTA V, send PC to sleep and than wake it up)

I forgot to tell about another problem with my PC, that is it can't wake up from sleep. When I'd turn it on, it's just spins up all the fans and that's all. Now this solved, for now.

The secondary slots were failed the the test, as the PC didn't even do anything more, than spin up the fans.

After this all I tried to put all the 4 RAM sticks back to place and I ran the tests with XMP Profile 1 and without and both ways works perfectly, GTA V still running with all the 16GBs RAM and without XMP till I write this at the moment.

My mobo recognises when the amount or type of RAM is changed and asks me if I'd like to reset my UEFI settings and my answer was always "Yes".

I'm not happy with these results as I still don't know what's wrong, because something probably is.

I also checked my latency in UEFI and CPU-Z that was the same all the time with each stick of RAM.

So are you still getting the problem?

If so, are you using 1a 1b 2a 2b?

If so, try 1a 2a 3a 4a instead.

No, it seems everything works correctly, at the moment. I've always used the primary slots only and never even tried to put the 4 sticks in only 2 channels, as I have 4.

The thing is, that I don't understand why it's working now, as it's exactly the same way it was before.

They used to scare of me but this one's bigger than the others, or at least faster and can run away.  :D

I'll test it for a week or so and see if it's stable. If no, I'll be back to this thread. If it's stable, I'll be still let you know about. I hope the problem have been solved.

For now, thank you to everyone for your help and time.  :)

Update:

Over a week had passed and my rig still runs flawlessly, even with heavily overclocked (for a few tests only) CPU and GPU. RAM's going on it's own 2666 MHz.

Thanks for all of your support.
