Holiday Buyer's Guide 2015

Well that's unfortunate, did Linus not mention the 290 in the video?
Realistically, AMD beats Nvidia dollar per frame in virtually every metric at the first two price points. But I guess AMD doesn't tend to sponsor many of Linus's videos sooooooo.

The $500 build would be great for something I'm planning but guess what? The 860K is not available in Australia!

i3 4130 or FX 6300 are better than the 860K/Pentium. Get a R9 380 also - that 960 is overpriced as fuck

Changed the 970 to 390, all good to go! System is running great.

Can a R9 390 run with a 500w power supply like the 970?

Yes, the 970 can run on a 400W PSU easily if the unit is good.  Wattage does not determine quality... to clarify:  The R9 390 can easily be powered by a good 500W PSU.  I would go for the $50 XFX (Seasonic) 550W unit though.

isn't there a guy with an i3 and a 290 on a 400W on the forum?

Yeah, I know... it has to burn out sooner than later though.  That thing(PSU) is at like 90% load easy.  Then again, it might be a magic PSU... IDK.

Is the EVGA B 500W suggested in the video enough? The price difference between the EVGA 500W and the XFX 550W is $40 in CAD. My budget is a bit tight.

It is in the "meh" category.  Somewhat acceptable.

With the XFX units going for $50 with a $25 MIR, there is no reason to cheap out.

@Sidarta

If your budget is that tight... I would say go for it (EVGA 500W Bronze), but only if your system load is low... maybe 425W or so at 100%.  I have burnt out a few PSUs and have not had them take out other components or catch fire.  They just stopped working.

He got a new 450W :)

B1, G1 and NEX are crappy

I'm sorry but this video was fucking laughable at best and brain damaging at worst. Let's start at 2:35. WHY ARE YOU GOING WITH A DAMN 960, WHEN THE ITX 285 IS LESS AND PERFORMS BETTER

5:09 Okay, really. You can get better PSUs for the $. You simply don't throw CX-tier PSUs in a $1000 rig.

8:54 Why. I'm sorry but why did you choose that PSU.

Check out my guide on how to scan cover art here!

Hmmm... At $2000 US, I'd still opt for the GTX 970 dual-GPU setup...especially if smooth gameplay is to be had at 1440p (with high/ultra settings).

Maybe I'm biased because that 2K setup is basically my current rig.  :D

In most games, that GTX 960 paired with any potato (CPU) will run circles around the 750Ti.

So I took your advise and did a little fudging of the two designs. I'm going to see if my old case can fit the power supply and the micro board, but if not, I'll just grab the Cooler Master. You can see it at http://pcpartpicker.com/p/48X9gs It's a little pricier than the other two designs, but it should work better too.

Contact the retailer and ask:  Is this motherboard updated to Haswell specifications.

This SSD is worth the $2 more(over 50% faster write speed):  http://pcpartpicker.com/part/a-data-internal-hard-drive-asp550ss3120gmc

Unless you must have Nvidia (driver argument is shitty, power consumption argument is equally shitty), this is a better GPU and saves you money:  http://pcpartpicker.com/part/powercolor-video-card-axr93804gbd5ppdhe

I've always heard that about Nvidia. Plus that Radeon is less expensive. As far as the SSD goes, I dunno, I've never heard of A-data nor anything about them so I'm not as open to that, but I will look into it. Thank you.
