Bm800 Mic Help

Louisaurus Rex

So i resently bought a bm800 condenser microphone and it needs phantom power, but one review said that if you have a desktop with 500w + then you can run it strait of that

right now i am running it into my 3.5mm mic jack directly from my mic and it is rather quite

can i run it of my 550w psu , do i need to get a phantom power supply (which i cant really afford) and can i get an xlr to usb 3.0 to run it without phantom power

I just posted some tests about this microphone with and without phantom power. Although it kind of works without it's so much better with 48V support power. I don't think the effect is related much to the PSU but I believe the sound card may make a difference. I have a 530W BeQuiet Pure Power but what really helped is the Behringer PSU400 and a XLR cable for 34Euro. It's now attached to an aged ATI built-in soundcard and works very well.

You can listen to the different results with the settings here:

You computer power supply does not affect the output voltage of your standard 3.5mm microphone jack on the front/back of your computer. With more power hungry microphones, the standard 1.5 volts from your microphone jack will not be enough. You need a separate power source called Phantom Power which will give the Microphone the 48 volts it needs. There are many options for this. I recommend buying a small mixer like the Behringer Xenyx 302USB which will give you the 48 volts and is USB compatible making it easy to use.

Hope this helps!
