Alright, I've searched, but I have no idea what is going wrong. I'm a complete after effects noob. When ever I make a composition it shows it in the top left as black, but on the preview screen, it shows up as nothing. Any ideas??

Help please. I just want it to work. I'm pulling my hair out because of something so simple. Ugh.

If you were to render it will be black

is there any way to make it not clear, its really making what I'm doing very difficult.

Yeah, ATM it is just unrendered.

My Rig:

It's blank because you do not have any video clips, images, text or other elements in your composition.  As for why it appears black... well that's because there is nothing there except empty space (and Space is black, isn't it?) ;)

 

Oh and in your composition preview window, if you go to composition settings you can change what the background color is for empty areas.  And at the bottom area of your composition window, there is an icon to turn on/off the transparency grid. (It's the grid icon to the left of "active camera")
