National Security is the exact reasoning.

Well then welcome to the club, now take you seat in our un-marked van while NSA agents put a bag over you head for looking at "questionable" material

Illuminati confirmed

Seriously this is getting out of hand. Everyone is now jumping on the US bandwagon of taking away people freedoms in the name of "national security". And people just let it happen. Not that it's entirely their fault, the media is specifically engineered to distract from exactly that sort of thing, and to spread fear so people feel like giving up their freedoms for security is something they need to do.

Don't be surprised if you see me in Canada in 10 years.

Don't see what the big deal is as long as you don't say anything incriminating on the internet...

I'm sure a lot of people download illegally, what this means is if a company wants to sue you for whatever, they can just rock up to a court and get your metadata information.

That's one of the most selfish and among some of the worst responses you can give to this in favor of domineering organization

With us both being perfect strangers and as someone tasked to legal enforcement, I'm sure you don't mind at all if I inspect your home nightly because you're not doing anything illegal, right?

Metadata is powerful and a great deal of information can be derived from it given it's kept in high quantity.

I'm more than happy if it's going to prevent teenagers from shooting a detective and if it is going to be used to stop organised crime.

Problem is, what is considered incriminating? What if saying things against the government becomes illegal? What if blowing the whistle on corruption becomes illegal?

It's fine to say, don't do anything illegal, but the problem is when the definition of 'illegal' is shifted.

Because the definition of illegal or unwanted may shift. What if they say, looking at tech news is illegal because you could learn how to build electronic triggers for bombs? What if creating independent media content becomes illegal because large media corporations don't want the competition?

This can, and has happened before in lots of countries across the world.
