Its all in the game engines and how they utilize it. I would say in the next 5-10 years max where graphics will ultimately bottleneck on a dual core CPU.

2 cores are already becoming an issue in gaming, so...now

it depends on the games - some games dont even run on dual cores anymore, others run perfectly fine.

Depends on what you mean by gaming.

If you mean the 'latest and greatest' releases - the ones with cutting edge graphics and such - then that time is now.

If you mean the sorts of games that are most commonly played by the common sorts of computer users then that time is probably five to ten years away.

2c 2t cpus are already "obsolete" for gaming, as for 6 to 8 core utilization, that will take a while before a game's engine will fully utilize those cores. DX 12 and vulkan should allow more cores to be used for draw calls though, but that's about it

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Yea this sorta thing is already happening, games which are aesthetically pleasing almost always use more than 2 cores. I doubt any game in the future would be uglier.

2 Cores are already out of Date. Some Games dont even start with a CPU like that.

IMHO it's already is, for gaming you want a strong quad-core CPU such as the i5-4460 or better.

On the flip side, some games already do take advantage of 6 or 8 CPU cores, but the gains are usualy pretty minimal and strong per core performance is still king and required that's why for example AMD CPU's perform quite bad in games.

So, just get a good modern intel quad-core CPU and call it a day, this will last you years.
