Nvidia 800 series

Knaj
Go to solution Solved by Enderman,

That wouldn't have happened if they had made desktop series 800's though...

yeah it would, because the desktop 800 series would be the architecture for the 900m mobile series...

when a new architecture like kepler or whatever comes out it goes to both mobile and desktop GPUs

and the mobile was already ahead so by skipping 800 desktop they just changed the name to 900 for both so that same number = same architecture

if they were to make an 800 series they would need completely stop the mobile GPU development for an entire generation and then there would be no maxwell mobile GPUs for like two years...

They simply skipped a generation on the desktop side.

Any reason for it?

Remember Windows 9?

They skipped 800 on the desktop side. Nobody really knows why. They just did.

It was so that the mobile generation could be in sync with the desktop generation

Because the mobile GPUs were one ahead, so by skipping the 800 desktop GPUs, now the 900m and 900 GPUs are the same architecture

they skipped it so the maxwell chips would all have the same numbers

they also skipped the 300 series because of oem and mobile. the number 3 is the number 8 cut in half, conspiracy?

I don't think that's quite right...

It would because there would be 900m gpus and 800 gpus otherwise... And 800 gpus would probably not be Maxwell.

Not sure.

I mean they were making 800 series mobile gpus... during that time, they could have been making 800 series desktop ones as well and it would have stayed in sync

Before this gets out of hand, maybe someone who remembers the timeline really well can set the record straight.  All along the 500, 600, etc. series were all in sync, and then all of a sudden there were 800 series mobiles with no desktop, and nvidia had to skip a number to "catch up".  Obviously something went off the rails at some point... where was it?

Kepler chips were 800 series for mobile GPU's I believe, so no it would still be out of sync, because then 800 desktop chips would of been maxwell and 900 series mobile chips would of been maxwell.

I believe that Nvidia wants to change the naming scheme as fast as possible for the new generation, so most people will think they are very outdated with graphics cards technology. I knew some guys that really thought 9800 GT is better than actual cards because of the number. That's possible.

I'm looking at a list of release dates and I can see where they went out of sync.  The 600 series was during 2012 with the desktop and mobile lining up nicely, then they start bringing out 700 series mobile chips in 2013, and only do the desktop line in 2014.  They've already set themselves up for a problem at that point.  Then alongside the 700 series desktop they bring out the 800 series laptop chips.

So they were just trying too hard in the mobile space and made themselves go out of sync :P
