G-Sync worth it? Looking at two different UW monitors

FoxStar

So, I'm going to be creating a new computer to replace a 4 year old laptop I've been using so far and now I'm trying to decide what monitor I should purchase.

I've been looking at the LG ultrawides specifically the 34UC87M-B (looking at the one on MassDrop) but as I've been researching I've found out about the new Gsync technology.

Is it worth the premium? The Acer X34, that should be out soon, costs $300 more than the fixed refresh rate monitors and I've never seen one in person.

I have the cash for either one, I can't seem to decide without seeing a gsync monitor in action.

Thanks for any help that can be given!

It does, but the only game I've really seen it happen was when I played WoW.

I'll be pairing the monitor with a GTX 980 ti, so I'm kinda expecting tearing to be a problem again.

If screen tearing bothers you a lot then get it :D I on the other hand find that it barely happens even on games where my framerate far surpasses the refresh rate on my screen... there was a game though where I noticed terrible screen tearing, heroes of the storm I think...

This is probably why I'm having trouble justifying the extra money for gsync, most of the games I play don't tear. And the ones that do, I've always just accepted it as a small cost of having a high framerate.

Well if you have a nice setup that can play most games at pretty high framerates maybe g-sync won't be needed.. I have a 980ti and I barely have screen tearing even at games where my framerate is over my monitors refresh rate... not to mention at 144hz it's really hard to notice screen tearing but this is solely based on my experience and this can differ ofc although if you say it doesn't disturb you right now than maybe it won't be a wise purchase. I'm sure the smoothness of g-sync is amazing specially at framerates lower than 60 (which is where tearing can be observed quite easily IMO)...

In short words, if you have the bucks to do it without big problems than go for it but if your budget is a bit limited and you'd need to get a little extra money here and there, well than I probably woudn't do it specially considering that screen tearing doesn't seem to be a problem for you as of now

I could afford it, but when I learned that the results of gsync where best seen at 40~ TPS, it got me thinking that maybe it wasn't necessary for my setup.

Since, the 980 ti runs most games around 55-65 at the 3440x1440 resolution.

Gah, I can be too indecisive for my own good, sometimes.

Oh and now MassDrop has the LG monitor down to $750. $500 less than the X34. Hmmm

500$ is quite the amount of money and giving 500$ more for a feature that maybe won't make a big diffrence to you (as you said tearing isn't a big issue atm) than maybe you won't need it as tearing is most usefull when you've already had a problem with tearing to begin with. Check out some reviews of both and see if the extra 500$ will be truly worth it in your situation or not  :D
