Your Battlefront Beta Impressions?

ManOfDisguise

Well I played the beta for a good 2 hours(and got max rank which is pretty easy) and I gotta say it's pretty fun and good. It does kind of feel like Battlefield Star Wars but really only because of the engine. But the gunplay is different enough to make it a Star Wars game. The 2 game modes are pretty cool in the beta but I found Walker Assault too onesided with the Imperials having those OP AT ATs. Seriously I can easily get 30-60 kills in a game if im on Imperials in Walker Assault. The sniper rifle is pretty cool too and the jetpack is also fun to use. The Drop Zone game mode is also very fun and doesnt have any of those AT ATs or what not so its really just infantry on infantry but really fun and the map is also cool.

Biggest problem with the beta so far are the servers. It took me so many attempts before I could find a server to play on but once I did it was all good. The Walker Assault heavily favors the Imperials imo which is also kind of a problem. The gameplay and gunplay are both pretty fun though. Haven't played as a Sith or Jedi yet but whenever I see them its really cool what they can do.

I don't think it'll be an amazing game that people will play for years but it could provide a bit of entertainment. I still wont be buying it though.

It also runs really nicely on my system no problems at all

So far I think it's alright but not anything exceptional. My problem is that I don't really care for playing online and care more about the single player experience which this beta is really bad at showing. I've played the survival mode a few times but it's extremely easy on normal mode to the point of it being boring. I'm sure I'll buy it, but I'll buy it in a year when the price has lowered. I plan on playing some multiplayer with friends this weekend so maybe it will impress me more later.

Is the beta open or closed? I'd like to try it at least before I buy it.

It's an open beta.

Only played it for about an hour and I have to say, call it a Battlefield clone or whatever, but the Star Wars theme is definitely there and I may actually pick this one up, which is surprising to me because I was half-expecting a so-so game, but I am actually enjoying it even in this open beta. Also handles very well @ 2560x1440 with Ultra settings on a 980, so another thumbs up for that.

Gonna get some friends in on this and we are gonna have a weekend go at this beta.

I thought it was OK but sadly its been heavily noobified compared to a battlefield core game which I really didn't like and the flying side of things was straight up rubbish. The sound effects are really nice and its quite pretty but the gameplay really didn't feel very deep to me which isn't helped by the very corridor styled maps and the lack of need for team interaction.

It'll be something I pick up but its gone from a I'll pick it up as soon as I know its fixed and playable (I leant my lesson about EA games from BF ;)) to I'll pick it up once there's a bit of a discount on it because it doesn't feel like it lives up to what I wanted from a full priced version.

Basically BF core owns it in terms of gameplay, if it wasn't Star Wars themed I would predict a very short lifespan for the product but I think the Star Wars theme will keep it going for years.

IMO, this game isn't Star Wars Battlefield, it's Star Wars of Duty. Strafing OP.

EDIT- Unless you have 20 friends in your team, you cannot win Walker Assault as Rebels.

I used to be quite active here.

I really like it so far, might buy it. It's the best looking game I've played graphically and runs really well. I get between 40-70fps with a single overclocked 290 at 4k with mostly high/ultra settings, ambient occlusion and AA off, so it's really well optimized. The menus run very smoothly which is awesome. 10/10.

I like it so far, much faster gameplay then I was expecting. With my sig setup I'm getting microstutter on ultra @ 1440p. However I get great fps, about 120. I think it may be the vram issue creeping up on me. Anyone else with a 970 with the same settings have that issue?

Played it for almost 2 hours, got to rank 4 and it's fun for a while. Honestly, as I said few times, I'd be happy if there were even more people, like 32 vs 32. And I find the card system weird. I mean I get it but it's weird. Why can't I put grenades (yes I know it's a card) on my MB3 (or did I miss that option)?

Bind the card to your MB3 :) I was looking for a throw grenade option at first too.

First of, there is nothing battlefield about it aside from the engine.

It's clearly call of duty-like.

Visuals are great as expected but that doesn't matter right now.

Maps:

WA is as already mentioned one sided as hell, those rebel turret are garbage and the spawn location are not so good.

It's like I'm playing metro in bf3

The drop pod map is OK but if your new your going to get rekt by the enemy if they have guys with jetpacks. Those are so OP on that map. Also spawn location is odd, if you die trying to get a pod there is no way you can make it back in time.

Both maps need to be Rebalanced.

Gunplay is eh ok.. Could use more guns.. Seriously.. 4 only? I remember star wars and more than 4 guns.

Vehicles as power ups is... Uh.. Weird to say the least. I dont remember that was a thing in battlefront 2.

Yet to try: jedi/sith and flying.

No comments yet on the card system... But I don't mind buying gear, it's better than rank locked gear.... Although both are present I think...?

Current conclusion: not sure, I think I'm going to get bored really fast. Titanfall had more to it than this and I didn't even like that game.

Just because it's star wars doesn't mean it's going to keep me playing more even though I love star wars.

Oh and im still salty for no space battles. Yeah Yeah battlefront 2's wasn't great but dice didn't make it so whatever.

I'm going to play some more to solidify my opinion but right now it's 50/50

Well it's a beta.

Tried Vader, got nailed by 5 enemies before I got to test his skills. It was awful. Flying is a bit fun though.

That is new. Took me time to get used to that.

Yes you have to be some rank to buy specific gear.

According to Origin I have played 2 hours so far. Most of it is pretty fun, but some of the other things need some fixing...

Gunplay;

Since it's blasters mostly being used they definitely made them feel different and shoot different than regular guns do. There's pretty noticeable travel time for your shots so you have lead quite a bit at medium to long range. I really like the active cooldown feature since it gives a vibe of Gears of War to me.

Flying;

I really, really hate flying. The aim focusing system needs reworked since it's only useful for straight firing and not leading shots. Also turning needs to be reworked, feels like my sensitivity goes from 100 on the ground to 5 in the air. Unless there's something I'm missing when it comes to controls for flying then I'm staying away from this as it is awful. You can do a lot of damage when you can land shots on the walkers and ground units/turrets. Also I noticed that Rebel flying feels a lot slower turning wise than Imperial. I don't know what's up with this but they need to look into it.

Turrets;

All turrets turning feel like crap. Almost as if mouse acceleration is turned on half way, but then you throw some butter in there to make it slippery too. It's weird and I'm staying away from turrets until they sort it out. But what's really weird is that I picked up a turret powerup and used it and it felt completely fine, turning and aiming were precise and I enjoyed it, but standard in-game turrets, both mounted and base turrets, have crap controls.

Jedi/Sith fighting;

I was able to play as both Vader and Luke, they have different abilities and can do tons of damage, but if you're not careful AT-ST walkers, flying units, and even standard soldier units and take you out pretty quickly. Also don't bother trying to attack the AT-AT walkers, they can just step on you and instantly kill you, learned that the hard way... What was really fun was I was Luke and got into a fight with Vader at the last push with the walkers and we were really just swinging the sabers at each other and using our abilities, even though there wasn't any cool saber fight sequences, it felt great to kill Vader.

Ability cards(or whatever they're called);

It was interesting using different cards to see what situations they were good in, but I opted mostly for the Grenade/Shield/Jumppack combo when doing standard non-vehicle gameplay and then switching to Rifle/Shield/Jumppack for vehicle gameplay since the rifle can do quite a bit of damage against vehicles and makes good for a medium to long range weapon for soldier units. The shield is just in case something is about to happen and I need immediate cover, good to put over objectives, and the jumppack is fun to use to get to higher vantage points and move around quicker or leave an area fast if you're low on health.

What I'd like changed here is just give us 3 ability card slots and don't limit what we can put in them. Right now the middle slot is restricted to only the Personal Shield and the Ion Shot, I'd like to have a setup where I can have Grenade/Rifle/Jumppack or even Rifle/Ion Shot/Personal Shield. I feel like I'm forced to pick either Ion Shot or Personal Shield than choosing to pick either of them. Maybe the full game will have more cards which will make this change redundant, but I like options and my options are a bit restricted right now in the beta.

Game modes;

Drop Zone is fun, but the jumppack is a must have since the game likes to spawn you very far away from the objective. Maybe rework the spawn system a bit, still fun though.

Walker Assault, now this is both fun and very frustrating. If you're playing Rebel and you don't have good pilots then just farm kills as best as you can since you're not going to win. This game mode is very Imperial sided, which is fun for the Imperial side(I got 64 kills just by using AT-ST's for example), but not very fun for the Rebel side. They either need to balance out the Imperial side(no ideas from me) or give the Rebels some extra firepower like rocket launchers. I know there are power ups for rocket launchers, but they seem very scarce at times and are also one use. I think I've only gotten 1 or 2 my whole two hours of playing so far and I only saw 1 or 2 other people using one as well. Maybe if they fix the turrets controls and give them a bit more power to them then they'll be worth using. Also the way Walker Assault's map is laid out is very Imperial sided as well, so I'd give Rebels more cover or something to give them a balanced field of play.

Edit: After playing a bit more and seeing different YouTube videos about Rebel tactics on the map I can see how easily Rebels can win now, but out of the 15 or so Walker Assault games I've played on Rebel side we've always lost. You really can't waste things like Orbital Strikes and T-47's, but my complaints about flying still stands, it sucks and needs reworking.

Missions;

Haven't played Survival yet, but it looks fun. I'm waiting for my friend or cousin to get online to try this out since it sounds like Horde mode which I enjoyed greatly in Gears of War.

Overall this is a very fun game and I'm very tempted to buy it day one. I'll have to move some money around and see what happens at release, but it's pretty safe to say that I'll be picking this up for full retail price or waiting for the closest sale to happen to pick it up for $30-$50. I 100% recommend this game. Oh and I've never played a Battlefront game before this, so I'm not sure how veteran Battlefront players feel about this game. Might be a hit or miss for them, not sure.

Update

Everything is on low except for texture quality (ultra), mesh quality (ultra), and shadow quality (medium), fxaa (low) @ 4k. I rarely go below 60fps now. I took a screen shot of ultra preset and my current settings and I cannot tell a difference, but I do get twice the FPS.

Bad.

Pickup System, is ridiculous. Teleport into a Wing...serious...?  <_<

Spawnlocations are ridiculous

Weapons have no power behind it.

Chaotic Battles without tactic.

Laughable Graphics.

Battlefield with SW Skin would be way better.

Battlefront feel like a Noobversion of Battlefield to match even the lowest denominator.

At this Point a dissapointment and no Reason to buy it.

I actually wasn't planning on buying it and just wanted to try out the beta. But, when you live out in the middle of no where with the only internet being 2 down and .5 up on a good day; competitive online play isn't much of a selling feature. One of my favorite things to do in Battlefront 1 and 2 was local coop so that's what I was looking into for this game.

I have seen a lot of people criticizing the game about things they simply didn't have enough time yet to make a fair critic on so I'm going to post my experience after 12h of gameplay with everything in the Beta unlocked.
(Had Early Access that's why that many hours already.)

First up shooting mechanics this videos sums it pretty good up so no need to write it down:

The Star Cards:
They change quiet drastically how you play as an example the personal shield allows you to activate uplinks or take a power up even while under fire so it's great for objective play.
The sniping rifle in combination with the jet pack lets you get on hills and play long range very good in combination with the MG to hold of the sidelines.
There are also passive Star Cards sadly there is only 1 in the Beta it decreases your cool down time when you get head shots the more headshots you do the higher the level of the card becomes which decreases to cool down time even further.
From what it looks like the final game will probably have 20+ or so Star Cards so I'm expecting there to be a lot of different play styles.

Customization: Locked in the Beta but if the skins in Battlefield where any indication it will probably will be packed with stuff.

Now to Walker Assault:
It is basically reverse Rush with a twist and is a lot of fun it has some major problems but I bet those will be ironed out before launch.
While currently the spawns are very broke which causes a lot of spawn killing to the rebel side the mode is actually not that imperial sided as it seems.
I have won rounds at the first uplink the key is holding the sideline and using the orbital strike, X-wings, mini anti vehicle turrets, ion star card, or speeders on them.
The main problem currently is that the objective on the rebel side is complicated and people don't seem to really understand how to correctly play it yet.
Here is are examples on how take down AT-AT's with ease:
Speeders:

Orbital Strike:(Guy screams when he wins so turn down the sound)

Drop Zone:
Fun and fast paced there isn't much to say about it as it's just a fancy capture the hill.
I personally see it getting boring after a while but that's also hard to judge on the limited content of the Beta.

Co-Op Waves:
Quiet fun especially with friends the only problem is that Beta version is just to easy as it has only 6 instead of the final 15 waves and only the lowest difficulty hopefully it will be a bigger challenge in the final game.
There are also collectables hidden on the map but they currently do nothing in the Beta so we have to wait and see what the purpose of those is in the full game.

Heroes:
You can get them as power ups on the map and you can see the sign of it through walls so keep an eye out.(Same goes for Vehicle pick ups)
Another video it sums it up:

Overall the game looks promising but there is still a lot that needs to be fixed especially the server system I have a big fear that without a server browser the game will have a lot of connection issues I had yesterday problems finding servers this was never once an issue with Battlefield as I could just do it manually.
Also those spawns are simply horrible right now and they need to add an in-game tutorial for Walker Assault so people understand the game mode.

This game has shot up to my #1 all time favorite. That's an achievement, it took the place of BF4, the game I dearly love, although it still is a close second. The graphics add to the experience, making you feel like you're in the movie itself, and all of the effects are just eye candy. The gameplay is great, very well laid out, and for a beta it is pretty polished. 11/10.
